Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop

Winter was an ideal season to change your skincare. Oils and creams are welcome in our routines to avoid dehydration and nourish the skin. Klairs, a K-beauty brand, developed a Fundamental line which includes Ampoule Mist and Water Oil Drop. The Fundamental line is a skincare line based on premium ingredients. I had a chance to try Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop, and I want to share my experience with you.

About Klairs

Klairs is a South Korean company. The brand belongs to Wishcompany, just like By Wishtrend and Wishtrend itself. According to the Klairs website, the brand makes skincare & makeup (bb cream, concealer and cushion) since 2010. The brand is cruelty-free and supports campaigns to stop animal testing. Majority of Klairs products are Vegan and Vegetarian-friendly. It's not only about animals, but the planet and your skin! Klairs products do not contain harsh colourants and artificial fragrances. The choice of products is limited, only 27 products and one of them is Soko Glam exclusive. The motto of the brand is "Simple but enough", the formulas should be able to fit the different conditions of the skin.

My experience with Klairs

Klairs is one of the first brands that helped my skin. Klairs Rich Moist Soothing Cream is my favourite moisturizer, and I couldn't find anything better since trying this cream. The photo of Rich Moist Soothing Cream is also one of the most stolen photos from my blog. Klairs Supple Preparation Unscented Toner is a product that you're interested the most on Kherblog - according to Google Analytics. I never had a bad experience with Klairs. Usually, the products made by this company saves me from dehydration and the sensitivity of the skin.

Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop - Packaging

I love Klairs design - it's a clever, minimalistic design. Sadly, I have no photos left (after I changed my hard drive) of the packaging. Each line has different colours. Midnight line is all black & blue (since the star ingredient of this line is blue as well), The rich moist line is white and blue. Supple Preparation colours are purple and beige. The fundamental line fits the white & greyscale with some light beige shades. The bottle is made out of glass which is a good thing. The bottle comes in a paper packaging.

Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop - Scent & Texture

Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop has a texture of dry oil and no scent. This line is minimalistic and you won't find here artificial scent ingredients.

What's a Watery Oil Drop?

Is this a facial oil? Or maybe a serum? Since the beginning, I thought Watery Oil Drop is a serum. I was right, Klairs made a serum based on water, but the texture itself is very similar to oil. Watery Oil Drop formula should moisturize your skin. It's a product designed for oily and combo skin types, but also dehydrated skin. If you have troubles where to put it in your routine - I would recommend to use it between toner or essence and moisturizer. You can skip a moisturizer if your skin feels like Water Oil Drop and cream is too much. I do not recommend to use Water Oil Drop and Oil together. Klairs serum is ideal for facial massage, it's lightweight, but at the same time, it leaves an oily residue.

What's inside the Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop?

Let's look a bit deeper. What can we find inside this product?

Aqua(Water), Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Water, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, Bifida Ferment Extract, Betaine, Dipropylene Glycol, Sorbitol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Aspergillus/Rice Ferment Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Xanthan Gum, Arginine, Carbomer, Tocopheryl Acetate, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Laminaria Japonica Extract, Ceramide NP, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Copper Tripeptide-1, Acetyl Hexapeptide-8

Glycerin is one of the most popular humectants in skincare. There's a large number of myths around glycerin like it can clog your skin. It doesn't clog your pores, but too much glycerin can make a sticky layer on the skin and even make your skin dryer than before due to TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss). Still, it's an ingredient which we want to see in formulas. Butylene Glycol is a moisturizer and solvent, but it's also alcohol. You see, not every alcohol in skincare is bad. Some of them have positive effects on your skin - just like Butylene Glycol, which is a common substance even in eco/green cosmetic products. Who doesn't like Green Tea? Even if we prefer to see Green Tea Extract in our skincare products, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Water is a positive ingredient too. Green tea is a source of polyphenols (EGCG), flavonoids and catechins. Next ingredient is Oryza Sativa (Rice) Extract, a source of Vitamin E. It's an excellent absorbent.

Bifida Ferment Extract is a fermented ingredient. We all know fermentation from the kitchen, in skincare this process helps to break bigger molecules down into smaller ones. Our skin can't allow larger particles to get through the outer layer of the skin. That's why the fermentation process is needed. Bifida Ferment Extract is a probiotic, an ingredient that makes your skin stronger and less irritated. Betaine is derived from sugar beets. It's an amino acid that keeps your skin moist and you might want to use it in your haircare routine. Dipropylene Glycol is a solvent. Sorbitol is an ingredient which you probably know because the food industry uses it too. It's a sugar that normally exists in fruits. In skincare, sorbitol is a moisturizer and thickener.

1,2-Hexanediol is a humectant and solvent. Aspergillus/Rice Ferment Extract is another fermented ingredient on our list. I do not know what do you expect from this substance, but it gives your skin moisture and calms the skin. Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract is an antioxidant with enormous popularity and use. You can use it as a moisturizer for both dry and oily skin or as an acne treatment due to its antibacterial properties. Maybe you fight with wrinkles and you need support? It's an antioxidant and it can repair your skin after the damage made by UV light (since UVA is helping your skin in aging) and free radicals. Even sensitive skin is a fan of this soothing humectant. I like Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate more in skincare than as food. Is a soothing plant related to your least favourite candy - Licorice! It works as an anti-inflammatory ingredient, but it has positive meaning for acne-prone skin. In general, Licorice can brighten your skin and help with acne. I wouldn't expect a lot from Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, but I think that adding it to this formula was a great move. Sorbitan Sesquioleate is an emulsifier used to create water in oil formulas. Ethylhexylglycerin is a preservative, it keeps your products fresh. Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer and Hydroxyethylcellulose are stabilizers. Sodium Hyaluronate is a salt form of a popular Natural Moisturizing Factor - Hyaluronic Acid. Xanthan Gum is a thickener and stabilizer, it makes sure that the product has ideal thickness. Xanthan Gum is also used in the food industry. Arginine is an amino acid, a moisturizer with antioxidant properties.

Carbomer does the same job as Xanthan Gum and Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer. Tocopheryl Acetate is a form of Vitamin E. It's an antioxidant with some moisturizing properties. It protects your skin from free radical damage. It supports UVB protection, but Vitamin E in a form of Tocopheryl Acetate is not as effective as Tocopherol.

Laminaria Japonica Extract or Saccharina japonica is a seaweed extract. This plant is also called Dasima, Haidai, Kombu or Ma-konbu. It's an edible seaweed, but usually, it is used as a soothing, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory ingredient in skincare. Ceramide NP or Ceramide 3 is an ingredient which we want to see in our products. Ceramides naturally occur in human skin and they have an important role. You can find them in the lipid barrier of the skin along with cholesterol and fatty acids. Ceramide is like a cement of the skin, it makes sure that your skin won't get dehydrated. Two of the last ingredients in this formula are most interesting for me, and I hope they'll be interesting for you too. Copper Tripeptide-1 is a peptide complex made out of copper and three amino acids - glycine, histidine and lysine. This complex naturally occurs in our body - you can find it in urine and saliva. It has a positive meaning to our body, it helps with wound healing, it stimulates glycosaminoglycans, collagen and elastin production, it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. That's why companies love to use it as a firming ingredient. Klairs use Copper Tripeptide-1 in many products like Midnight Blue Youth Activating Drop which review you can find on Kherblog. I used formulas with GHK-Cu before and in my case - it helps a lot with wound healing and from time to time I like to add Copper Peptide serums to my skincare to give my skin some healing support. But it's not the only peptide in this formula. Meet Acetyl Hexapeptide-8, an ingredient that people loves to call "botox in a jar" or Argireline. It's a neuropeptide that helps with wrinkles - especially those related to muscle movement. Still, I wouldn't expect very surprising effects while using this ingredient.

How does Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop work?

A fundamental line from Klairs can be considered as a premium line. Formulas are simple - no colourants, no scent ingredients - what else do you want? There's a long list of reasons why I still love Klairs even if I don't buy Klairs products as often as I used to do. The reason is simple - local prices feel a bit abstract in comparison to Wishtrend prices. Right now borders are banned so I can't even order products straight from Wishtrend, but my problem with Wishtrend is that they have so many good occasions - you won't buy just one product. You'll end up with your cart fully loaded even if the amount of brands carried by Wishtrend is tiny in comparison to Jolse or Stylekorean.

According to Klairs' website, Klairs Fundamental Water Oil Drop is a water-based serum with oils. It looks like a win-win situation, but is it a good mix? This product doesn't contain argan or jojoba oil - any oil which you would expect is not here. Usually, we can group oils in 3 groups - oily oil, dry oil and oil that is a middle option between oily and dry. I have mixed feelings about this oil because I don't like it. It might add some moisture to the skin, but my skin acts out a bit when I use this oil and after a few days I started to have problems with dryness which later became a normal situation and I guess that's all because I spend lots of time at home. It's a product which might work with dehydrated skin and dry skin, but when you add too much moisture to moist skin - the effect might be different than expected - just like in my case, the skin might get dehydrated. Nowadays, I use the Klairs Watery Oil Drop as a treatment for special needs. It's an interesting product, but still a bit of a mystery.
