What's a sleeping mask and why you should add it to your skincare routine

I used to hate using masks - no matter if it was clay or sheet mask, I didn't enjoy it until I found a first mask that really worked for my skin - it was a mask from The Body Shop, back then I was poor student (I still am a poor student but back then I was a high school student) so I bought smaller versions of this mask and used it on pimples. Nowadays I love masks but lately, I started to use a sleeping mask more often than a sheet mask. What's a sleeping mask and why you should add it to your skincare routine?

What's a sleeping mask?

When you hear "sleeping mask" then you probably think of a mask which you put on your eyes before you go to sleep. Unfortunately, it's not a mask we want to talk about today. Sleeping mask is nothing else than an overnight treatment. Usually, it's a moisturising treatment but it can do much more than just preventing a water loss, it can brighten your skin or help with acne.

Do you want to really need a sleeping mask?

It depends on your skin condition. Sometimes additional treatment in your routine can be a game changer but I wouldn't think about sleeping mask like a must-have part of your routine even if I keep couple masks and samples of them in my bag just in case I need it.

Sleeping mask vs moisturizer

Is sleeping mask different than a moisturizer? Usually, sleeping masks have more gel-like formulas or light moisturizer formulas than heavy formula. There are people that use a sleeping mask instead of a moisturizer and I do that as well but mostly during the summer.

How to find an ideal sleeping mask?

A perfect sleeping mask that fits all skin types doesn't exist but each skin has its own special needs and that's why the choice is so big. Always look forward to the ingredients that are proven to work. If your skin is dry then go for Hyaluronic Acid, if your skin is sensitive then Panthenol and Allantoin can be the best. Mature skin will enjoy ingredients like Adenosine or Rose while dull skin prefers Niacinamide.

Meet my favourite sleeping masks

I haven't tried a high amount of sleeping masks but let me show you some masks I already know well and masks that I got in my stash.

Caolion Pore Tightening Memory Sleeping Mask

Caolion Pore Tightening Memory Sleeping Mask

I still have a sample of this mask, what makes it so original? The herbal scent that got me in a second. It contains Niacinamide and Adenosine, but it also contains natural extracts like lavender extract and... Peppermint oil. If you've got any allergies then I recommend testing it first (even if it would be great if we all remember about patch testing) still I like this one a lot.

Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask

Commleaf Rose Sleeping Mask

Commleaf is a brand of the year 2018 for me and I appreciate their products a lot - their formulas are amazing but also packaging. Rose Sleeping Mask might look average but their other lines are really like art. Rose Sleeping Mask is a formula masterpiece. You can get it alone or with a silicone brush that makes application of the mask easier. This mask is safe even for people with fungal acne. The main ingredient is Rose Water but there are also small pieces of rose petals in it, still, this mask is full of amazing ingredients like Centella Asiatica, Niacinamide, Green Tea, Licorice Root, Sodium Hyaluronate, Panthenol, Allantoin and Adenosine. All skin types should love it because it's a relaxing and moisturising mask with ingredients that really works on the skin.

Hanyul Yuja Sleeping Mask

Hanyul Yuja Sleeping Mask

I'm in love with Yuja series from Hanyul. I made a post about Hanyul Yuja Oil and now I added a sleeping mask to my routine. I won't share the review with you yet - you'll have to wait for the next post to read the full review of this lovely mask! All I can tell you is that this mask contains Niacinamide.

Huxley Good Night Sleep Mask

Huxley Good Night Sleep Mask

This mask because part of my stash half of the year ago but I still didn't open it. The mask comes in the tube which fits amazing to the minimalistic interior - you can but dried flowers in it. What's so amazing in this mask and why I've decided to buy it just to use it when the time and skin needs are right? This mask is full of amazing ingredients like Ceramides, Centella, Beta Glucan and Sodium Hyaluronate.

Klairs Vitamin E Sleeping Mask

Klairs Vitamin E Sleeping Mask

I made a full review of this mask. Klairs is one of the brands that I really appreciate, this year they stopped a bit with new releases but lately, I see this mask a lot. It's a Niacinamide and Vitamin E mask which is recommended to use with Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin C Drop Serum. I haven't tried them together and I probably won't since my skin doesn't like the mixture of vitamin C and Niacinamide in one routine together but if your skin is not sensitive to this mix then go for it - it can be helpful with post acne pigmentation and dull skin.

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask review

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask

This is actually one of my favourite sleeping masks. There are two different versions - the regular one and lavender one. I haven't tried lavender one yet but I got it just because lavender can be helpful for problems with sleep and usually during the summer I'm having problems with sleep. The ingredients of both might not be impressive but there are lots of occlusives like Dimethicone or Cyclopentasiloxane.

Neogen Blemish Soothing Overnight Mask

This mask is a new release from Neogen, it's a mask recommended for acne prone skin. It contains alcohol - quite a lot alcohol that's why I use it on my body instead of using it on my face. It actually reminds me of a medication I used on my acne when I was a teenager. Even if it's a mask for acne prone skin still it has moisturising ingredients like Aloe and Sodium Hyaluronate.

Re:p Nutrinature Ultra All-night Moisture & Relief Mask

Re:p is the only Korean brand with the leaping bunny certificate. This brand is a sister company to Neogen. I made a full post about it a year ago. This mask contains Niacinamide and Adenosine, brightening and wound healing ingredients. The scent is very strong and herbal but some people will find it relaxing.

Skin79 Rose Waterful Sleeping Mask

Skin79 Rose Waterful Sleeping Mask

I used the old version of this mask and at first I liked it a lot since the scent was nice and my skin was brighter but then I started to notice that my body can't really use this mask - even my mood got worse so I've decided to stop using it.

Skinfood Beauty Recipe Tomato Soup Sleeping Pack

Skinfood Beauty Recipe Tomato Soup Sleeping Pack

This is probably the weirdest sleeping mask I've ever tried, actually, I was able to try it thanks to Okiem Justyny. I can't say that I'm a fan of it, this mask doesn't remind me of potato as all, it should give brightening effects but there's something that makes me less interested in this mask and I practically used it twice so I can't give you a full review.

As you can see sleeping masks are ideal products for spring and summer but also during the other seasons can be useful. Do you use sleeping masks? What's your favourite sleeping mask?
