growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler and growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment

I feel like hair care is growing a lot lately, but Korean hair care brands are still a bit of an unknown. A few months ago, I mentioned GrowUs when I was analysing the so-called "Korean Hair Care Routine" trend. When GrowUs contacted me, I knew I have to try this brand and share my experience with you. Meet GrowUs, a Korean professional cosmeceutical hair care brand and their two products - growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler and growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment.

I'm glad that hair care became a trend since for over 3 years I've been working with haircare products daily and haircare as well as trichology became my speciality. I'm more even happy to introduce you to K-beauty hair care.

Scalp vs hair

I want to mention one thing before I start writing about each step, something I always mention to my team at work. Scalp and hair are different - There are products which we use to treat the scalp, products for hair and both. Not every product should be used on full length or scalp.

About the brand GrowUs

GrowUs is a professional cosmeceutical hair care brand from Korea. The brand name comes from the sentence ‘Growing us with the sea’, which means that GrowUs is focused on the sea and ocean. It's not a surprise why sea-derived ingredients take a huge part in GrowUs' products. The brand's motto is 'beauty found in the sea' and it's probably the first hair care brand focused on thalassotherapy I've ever seen.

For GrowUs not only products and clients are important, but also the environment. The brand is focused on protecting the marine ecosystem. Every packaging is created of PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) material and the brand itself wants to focus on sustainability and lower carbon emission.

Do you need a scalp scaler?

One of the first products created by GrowUs is Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler. What's a scalp scaler or scalp scrub? It's a product that helps with hair follicles, it unclogs the scalp. The skin on the scalp isn't very different from the skin on the entire body - it also can clog or be in terrible condition. That's why exfoliation of the scalp is also important. I love using scalp scrubs because I got an oily scalp and it easily clogs, many shampoos don't work for me. It's good to use a scalp scaler 1-2 times per week, but not too often. This treatment is like a massage on your scalp and it doesn't only help cleanse the scalp, but it also stimulates your hair to grow.

growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler - Packaging

I love the design of the growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler - it's so aesthetically pleasing. The font on the packaging and earthy tones - you can't say no to this brand! The tube inside the box is transparent and you can see the texture.

growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler - Texture & Scent

growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler is quite delicate. I'm used to old The Body Shop Fuji Green Tea Scalp Scrub and Christophe Robins - both of them contain big chunks of sea salt and they are not the most delicate scrubs for your scalp. For many haircare addicts and trichologists sea salt is going to be the worst choice, but I'll defend sea salt and growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler - in my case, sea salt does a better job than acid scrubs.

growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler has a very delicate texture, it's like mixing tiny pieces of salt with a moisturizing texture.

growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler - Ingredients

Sodium Chloride is nothing else than well-known salt. In skin care, sodium chloride is a thickener. We also use it as an exfoliant. Sea Water or Maris Aqua is water from the sea or ocean, rich in minerals. It has a positive meaning for the skin - it can be soothing, but it's a popular ingredient in hair styling products since it makes waves and curls look better. Water hides in cosmetic products under names such as Aqua or Eau. It's a solvent, but it's not your regular drinking water. Water in skin care needs to fit some standards. It should be clean and free from minerals, microorganisms or other substances. Usually, water makes up the majority of the content of the product. Glycerin or Glycerol is a humectant. Its origin can be natural or synthetic - depending on the product. It protects TEWL (transepidermal water loss) and naturally occurs in the skin. It's one of the NMFs - natural moisturizing factors. It's practical in hair care. Glycerin won't clog your skin or irritate it just the opposite - it protects your skin from irritation. Cocamide MIPA is an oil-in-water emulsifier and surfactant. Sodium Lauroyl Glutamate is a surfactant with antistatic properties. Decyl Glucoside is a non-ionic surfactant that works as an emulsifier and thickener. Lauryl Betaine is a delicate surfactant responsible for bubbles. It has antistatic properties, but it can be also used as an emulsifier. Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate is a surfactant. Glycol Distearate is a water-in-oil emulsifier and oily emollient. It leaves a protective film on the skin and hair. Sorbitol is a sugar, and what does sugar do in products? It works as a humectant, but it also works as a thickener and stabilizer. Caprylyl Glycol is an oily emollient and humectant. It leaves a moisturizing film on the surface of the skin. Menthol is a scent ingredient which we all know well. It is derived from peppermint Menthol and has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It cools your skin down and helps with relaxation, but it can be sensitizing for the skin. Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is an antistatic polymer. It makes hair easier to brush and supports the transport of active substances. Laminaria Japonica Powder or Kelp Powder. This plant is also called Saccharina Japonica, Dasima, Haidai, Kombu or Ma-konbu. It's an edible seaweed, but in skincare, this powder can have antioxidant properties, it's also a source of minerals. Your skin will get nutrition and moisture from Laminaria Japonica Powder. Caramel is a brown pigment. Disodium EDTA neutralizes metal ions in the formula to keep products fresh.

Panthenol is a humectant. It prevents skin from TEWL (Transepidermal Water Loss). Panthenol is also known as vitamin B5, and it helps with inflammation. Panthenol can soothe the skin irritated by preservatives, scent ingredients, and chemical sunscreens - it might have a meaning for lipids in our skin and skin barrier. It speeds up the healing process. It's good to use it after sunbathing. In hair care, Panthenol has moisturizing properties. If you have problems detangling your hair or hair growth go for Panthenol. It is good to mix it with niacinamide and zinc oxide. You can see it in products for atopic dermatitis or psoriasis. Sea Salt is rich in minerals exfoliator. It has antistatic properties, but sea salt can be also used in styling products - to create waves and curls. It can be relaxing, and it might help with swollen legs. Dipropylene Glycol is a solvent with moisturizing properties. Glyceryl Caprylate is a natural oily emollient and emulsifier. It creates a delicate film on the surface of the skin. It has some antimicrobial properties. Spirulina Platensis Extract is a soure of minerals and vitamins, but also folic acid, palmitic acid and stearic acid. It's a humectant and antioxidant that nourishes and calms your skin. Laminaria Japonica Extract or Saccharina japonica is a seaweed extract. This plant is also called Dasima, Haidai, Kombu or Ma-konbu. It's an edible seaweed, but usually, it is used as a soothing, moisturizing and anti-inflammatory ingredient in skincare. Undaria Pinnatifida (Algae) Extract is derived from brown algae. It's an ingredient which you might know from Japanese cuisine, but this ingredient is a tyrosinase inhibitor which makes it a great tool to fight pigmentation. Butylene Glycol is a common ingredient in products. It's not only a solvent. We use butylene glycol because it helps with the penetration of active ingredients, protects products from drying and moisturizes skin and hair. This ingredient can prevent hair loss and make your hair stronger. 1,2-Hexanediol is a synthetic solvent and preservative - it protects products from microorganisms by boosting other preservatives. At the same time, it can moisturize the skin, and it has no unpleasant effects on your epidermis. Ethylhexylglycerin is a preservative with subtle moisturizing and antimicrobial properties. Fragrance (Parfum) is a scent composition. It can cause allergic reactions. Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone is a scent ingredient. Limonene is a scent ingredient, and it makes the product smell like lemon or orange. Limonene can enhance the penetration of other substances, but at the same time, it can irritate the skin.

How does growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler work?

I was so excited, and I'm not disappointed. Let's start with more technical information. growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler contains 353,800 ppm Sea Salt, 150,000 ppm Sea Water and Seaweed Complex. I said that before - growus is all about sea and ocean. The ingredients prove that! It also contains Self-Heating Complex which is supposed to help you remove impurities from your scalp. I tried 7-second conditioners/treatments popularly in Europe now, and they are getting warm in a second. The self-Heating Complex in growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler is very delicate. I didn't feel the heat at all, but maybe you did? I'm surprised how delicate this scalp is - it's not a harsh salt scalp, but a deep exfoliating scrub with moisturizing properties. The scent is delicate, the texture is fine, and the packaging doesn't clog even if it's a scrub. I like to mix my scrubs with shampoos, but with this one, I would never try it. Why? Because it's such a delicate scalp scrub. It's super gentle, and the salt doesn't stay on my scalp like the big chunk of sea salt usually in scalp scrubs - they just like to hide in hair.

growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment - Packaging

growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment comes in a pink marble-like box. Inside you can find a transparent bottle with a white spray tip. It has a special blockade so the product won't open on its own.

growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment - Texture & Scent

I love how at first when you see this bottle, you think it's pink water with some weird white stuff on the bottom - shake it, and you'll see a pink pearly texture with an amazing spark! It's a liquid solution with a strong scent. It kinda reminds me of a scent my grandma used which for me is way too strong, but I believe some people might love it.

Cyclopentasiloxane is a dry emollient and volatile silicone. It has a bad reputation since people nowadays are scared of silicones. Don't be scared, Cyclopentasiloxane doesn't leave a heavy film on the skin since volatile silicones are evaporating after touching your skin. They help with the application process of the product. If you want your skin or hair to have a silky feeling - go for this one. It's a lightweight substance that won't cause you acne. Isopropyl Myristate is an oil-soluble emollient, it makes a delicate occlusive film on the surface of the skin, but some people might not like it since it can clog the pores. Cyclohexasiloxane is a volatile silicone and emollient. It makes the product easier to spread on the skin, and it protects the moisture in your skin by creating a gentle, non-greasy film on the surface of your epidermis. Cyclohexasilocane quickly evaporates from your skin. Isododecane is a light emollient, mostly used in hair products. Ethanol is nothing else than Alcohol. Usually, when people see Alcohol in skincare, they treat it as the worst thing that exists. The fact is that Alcohol has positive and negative meanings for our skin. It all depends on the amount of Alcohol. One of the main reasons why companies use this ingredient in their products is better penetration of the skin, thanks to Alcohol substances getting deeper than when it's used on their own. We can't deny that Alcohol kills microorganisms and bacteria. It's a long topic, but if you ever search for alcohol to sanitize your hands or makeup brushes - search for Isopropyl Alcohol in 40-70% solutions, they are more effective than 90% versions. Squalane is an ingredient very similar to our sebum. Squalane and squalene sound similar, but there's a difference. Squalane has no double bonds while squalene has double bonds. What does it mean? Squalane is a more stable version of squalene. What I love about this ingredient is how well it works with all skin types, and how our skin needs it. Believe me, if your skin is irritated - go for squalane! This ingredient is usually derived from sugarcane or olives. It acts like an emollient and you need it in your life. Fragrance (Parfum) is a scent composition. It can cause allergic reactions. Dimer Dilinoleyl Dimer Dilinoleate creates a film on the surface of the hair to prevent dehydration and water loss. Isopropyl Palmitate is a dry emollient, but it's also an ester which you get after mixing isopropyl alcohol and palmitic acid. Tocopheryl Acetate is a form of Vitamin E, Tocopherol. It's an antioxidant that helps with skin & hair hydration and prevents TEWL (transepidermal water loss). This ester form of Tocopherol is more stable, but it's not as effective. Some people consider it a preservative, but Vitamin E should be used as a preservative. It's good to mix it with Vitamin C and Ferulic Acid. Menthol is a scent ingredient which we all know well. It is derived from peppermint Menthol and has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It cools your skin down and helps with relaxation, but it can be sensitizing for the skin. Salicylic Acid is a beta hydroxy acid (BHA). It's an exfoliant with keratolytic properties. It normalizes the keratinization process. This acid doesn't only work on the surface of the skin like AHAs, but it goes deep into pores. It might have anti-inflammatory properties, but we know that acne-prone skin loves it. If you have problems with ingrowths or keratosis pilaris then salicylic acid is an ingredient for you.

Raphanus Sativus (Radish) Seed Extract is a source of Vitamin A and C, iron, zinc and potassium. It stimulates hair growth. Citronellol is a scent ingredient. It adds a rose/floral scent to the product. It can be sensitizing. Geraniol makes products smell like geranium. It can be sensitizing. Linalool gives a floral scent to products. It can irritate the skin. Mica is a mineral, and it works as a pigment. It reflects light. There's a controversy around this ingredient - mining this ingredient isn't always going along with proper work conditions. Titanium Dioxide is a mineral (or physical) sunscreen agent. It protects your skin from UVB and UVA II radiation and might cover some lower waves in the UVA I spectrum. It has a typical white colour visible on the skin, unless it's a nano version then this white tint might not be visible at all. This ingredient has a second task - it works as a pigment. Titanium Dioxide works perfectly for skin that needs visible protection like skin with melasma, nice that white pigment works as a barrier or protective film on the skin. It has one additional task, it makes products stay fresh a bit longer. Eclipta Prostrata (False Daisy) Extract is a source of vitamin C, flavonoids, triterpenes or phytosterol. False Daisy is a typical herb for Ayurveda. In skin care, this ingredient has anti-aging properties and it's an antioxidant. In hair care, it helps with hair growth and regeneration. You probably know Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract as Neem. It's a plant typical for India, Sri Lanka or Pakistan. Neem comes from Ayurveda, and it's told to have antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. Eugenol is a scent ingredient, it can be sensitizing. Limonene is a scent ingredient, and it makes the product smell like lemon or orange. Limonene can enhance the penetration of other substances, but at the same time, it can irritate the skin. Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil is an emollient rich in oleic acid and vitamin E. It prevents TEWL (transepidermal water loss). Tin Oxide is a pearly pigment. It has some sun-protecting properties. Sodium Chloride is nothing else than well-known salt. In skin care, sodium chloride is a thickener. We also use it as an exfoliant. Biotin is also called Vitamin B7 or even Vitamin H. We mostly associate biotin with hair and nail conditions since biotin boosts keratin production. It helps with the moisture of skin and hair.

Bifida Ferment Lysate is a probiotic and a product of the fermentation process. Bifida Ferment Lysate strengthens the skin and its natural microbiome. Bifida ferment lysate can make sensitive skin secure and less susceptible to the negative influence of external factors. This ingredient can help fix the damage caused by UV radiation or fix damaged DNA. Collagen Extract is a humectant. Butylene Glycol is a common ingredient in products. It's not only a solvent. We use butylene glycol because it helps with the penetration of active ingredients, protects products from drying and moisturizes skin and hair. This ingredient can prevent hair loss and make your hair stronger. Milk Protein Extract is a humectant. Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil is a source of linoleic acid and vitamin E. Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil works as an emollient. Sometimes you can see it as a carrier oil for other substances. It has anti-inflammatory properties and makes the skin barrier stronger. This oil should work on all types of hair porosity. Lactobacillus/Eriodictyon Californicum Ferment Extract or Yerba Santa Glycoprotein has moisturizing properties. 1,2-Hexanediol is a synthetic solvent and preservative - it protects products from microorganisms by boosting other preservatives. At the same time, it can moisturize the skin, and it has no unpleasant effects on your epidermis. Pearl Extract is an ingredient popular in traditional Chinese medicine. It's a source of minerals and proteins. Saccharomyces Ferment Filtrate is what you get from the yeast fermentation process. It's a moisturizing and soothing formula that you can use with sensitive skin. Hizikia Fusiforme Extract or Hijiki Extract has anti-inflammatory properties. It's a brown alga popular in Japan, according to Japanese folklore, Hijiki is related to health condition and beauty - eating Hijiki regularly can improve the condition of your hair. It's a source of iron, calcium, fucoxanthin and fucoidans. Saccharomyces/Rice Ferment Filtrate is a probiotic with brightening properties. It makes your skin microbiome stronger. Saccharomyces/Coix Lacryma-Jobi Ma-yuen Seed Ferment Filtrate is a probiotic. Hydrogenated Lecithin is a version of lecithin. It works as an emollient in the formulas. Ceramides naturally occur in the skin - it's like cement in the skin. Ceramide NP strengthens the skin barrier to prevent dehydration. Hydrolyzed Collagen is a humectant with a smaller molecular weight than Collagen. It binds water to prevent TEWL (transepidermal water loss). It makes hair easier to detangle. Hydrolyzed Soy Protein is a humectant derived from soy. It has antistatic properties and it fills and protects damaged hair.

growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler and growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein is a smaller, but hydrating molecule. It's a source of cysteine which makes it an ideal ingredient to deal with damaged hair. Hydrolyzed Corn Protein is a tiny but powerful molecule. It hydrates the skin and hair. It also has antistatic properties, and it can fix damaged hair. Hydrolyzed Keratin is a protein similar to the protein in our body. It helps with hair and nail condition. Hydrolyzed Keratin is recommended for split ends and frizzy hair. Diospyros Kaki (Persimmon) Fruit Extract is an antioxidant-rich in vitamin C. Camellia Japonica Leaf Extract is an antioxidant with anti-aging properties. Ceratonia Siliqua (Carob) Fruit Extract is a source of minerals such as iron and calcium. It's an antioxidant with humectant properties. Gelidium Cartilagineum (Red Algae) Extract is a source of proteins and minerals. It works as a thickener, but it has a positive influence on hair - it makes hair soft. It helps with blood circulation and might help with cellulite or stretch marks. This ingredient work as a humectant that transports active substances to the deeper layers of the skin. It has antistatic properties which makes it a phenomenal ingredient for both - skin and hair. Soluble Collagen is a protein. Collagen usually leaves a moisturizing film on the skin since collagen molecules are quite big. Soluble collagen helps with the moisture of the skin by preventing TEWL (transepidermal water loss). This ingredient is not cruelty-free since it's usually derived from fish or cows. Sodium Soy Hydrolyzed Collagen has antistatic properties. Zinc Hydrolyzed Collagen is an antistatic substance.

growus Sea Salt Therapy Scalp Scaler and growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment

How does growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment work?

Let's start from the beginning. growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment contains Protein Complex (including collagen and ceramide NP) and Marine Pearl Complex (including pearl extract and pink salt). This product is recommended for damaged hair, hair after bleaching, perm and dyeing or frizzy hair. This pearly textured spray is a big surprise for me since it does its job perfectly - it makes brushing easier, and it can be an additional treatment to hydrate your hair and protect it. I wouldn't use it as a protection from heat, but as a good addition to my routine, especially if your hair is frizzy or hard to brush. My main, and probably the only problem with growus Damage Therapy No Wash Treatment is the scent. I can't get used to this heavy scent, but besides that, it's an ideal hair care spray. I believe if you have curly or wavy hair, this product might make the curls look better since it contains sea salt and seawater.
