European sunscreens are highly popular, and many people bring them back from their trips around Europe. One of the most significant groups of sunscreens available in Europe is made by the L’Oréal Group, and Vichy is one of the brands that belongs to this portfolio.

This year, Vichy released the Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid SPF50. But is this sunscreen as good as the popular UV-Age Daily line?

What’s UV?

UV stands for ultraviolet. It refers to a specific range of wavelengths within the electromagnetic spectrum. Although UV rays are invisible to the human eye, they are very much present. There are three main types of ultraviolet radiation - UVA, UVB, and UVC - each with different wavelengths and unique properties.

UVA, UVB, and UVC - What Do They Do, and Where Can You Find Them?

Most people have heard of UVA and UVB, but what about UVC - or the difference between UVA1 and UVA2? Let's start with the shortest wavelengths. UVC (100–280 nm) is naturally present in sunlight, but it is almost completely absorbed by the Earth's ozone layer, so it doesn't normally reach the Earth's surface. UVC radiation is highly effective at killing bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms, which is why it is widely used in germicidal lamps.

You may wonder why these lamps appear to emit visible light if UVC itself is invisible. The blue or purple glow doesn't come from the UVC radiation itself - it comes from materials inside the lamp that emit visible light. This glow simply indicates that the lamp is operating. Despite the visible light, you should never remain in a room while an unshielded UVC lamp is on, as direct exposure to UVC radiation can damage your skin and eyes. This technology is commonly used in laboratories, hospitals, and other environments where disinfection is essential.

Next is UVB (280 - 315 nm). A simple way to remember its effects is that the "B" stands for "Burn." UVB is primarily responsible for sunburn because it affects the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. However, UVB also plays an important role in the production of vitamin D, which is essential for maintaining healthy bones and supporting a properly functioning immune system. A vitamin D deficiency can contribute to conditions such as osteoporosis.

Finally, there's UVA (315 - 400 nm). The "A" stands for "Aging" because UVA is the primary cause of premature skin aging. Unlike UVB, UVA penetrates much deeper into the skin, reaching both the epidermis and the dermis. Another important difference is that UVA can pass through glass, meaning you can still be exposed to it indoors or while driving.

Both UVA and UVB can damage skin cells. Prolonged exposure increases the risk of skin cancer, accelerates premature skin aging, and contributes to oxidative stress. That's why wearing sunscreen every day - even when you're indoors near windows or driving - is an important part of protecting your skin.

Should You Wear Sunscreen at Home?

We already know that UVA rays can penetrate glass, but does that mean you should wear sunscreen indoors? The answer is yes - especially if you spend a lot of time near windows. If you work by a window or sit in direct sunlight for extended periods, applying sunscreen in the morning is a good idea. You can also reduce UV exposure by installing UV-protective window film or simply keeping your blinds or curtains closed during the sunniest hours of the day.

Ultimately, the decision is up to you and your daily routine. Personally, I keep my blinds closed throughout the morning because my windows face east. By the afternoon, the direct sunlight has mostly disappeared. Since I apply sunscreen every morning and reapply it throughout the day, I already have protection in place by the time the afternoon sun reaches my windows.

What's the Difference Between Mineral and Chemical Sunscreens?

There are two main ways to classify sunscreens: mineral (inorganic) and chemical (organic). Mineral sunscreens use inorganic UV filters - most commonly zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These ingredients provide broad-spectrum protection, especially when used together. One drawback is that they can leave a white cast, particularly on deeper skin tones, although many modern formulations have significantly reduced this effect.

Chemical sunscreens use organic, carbon-based UV filters. These filters are typically lightweight, spread easily across the skin, and generally don't leave a white cast. Modern formulations often combine multiple UV filters to provide broad-spectrum protection while maintaining an elegant, comfortable finish.

Neither type is inherently better than the other. The best sunscreen is the one you'll apply generously, reapply as needed, and wear consistently every day.

For some people - especially those with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) or melasma - tinted mineral sunscreens containing iron oxides may provide additional protection against visible light, which can contribute to hyperpigmentation. In these cases, a tinted sunscreen with iron oxides may offer an extra layer of protection beyond UV radiation alone.

Sunscreen Reapplication

Most sunscreen brands recommend reapplying sunscreen every two to three hours. The reason is simple: throughout the day, sunscreen gradually wears off. We sweat, touch our faces, wear clothing that rubs against our skin, and wipe our skin with towels or tissues. All of these everyday activities can remove part of the protective layer, reducing its effectiveness.

It's also important to remember that everyone responds differently to UV exposure. One person's skin may start to burn after just five minutes in the sun without protection, while someone else may be able to stay outside much longer before experiencing the same effect. Factors such as skin tone, UV index, time of day, altitude, and individual sensitivity all influence how quickly UV damage can occur.

As a general rule, reapplying sunscreen every two hours - or every two to three hours, depending on your level of sun exposure - helps maintain consistent protection throughout the day. If you're swimming, sweating heavily, or drying your skin with a towel, you should reapply even sooner, following the instructions on your sunscreen's label.

Meet the brand: Vichy

Vichy is a French dermocosmetics brand that I think almost everyone has heard of. It was founded in 1931 by Dr Prosper Haller, and the brand’s name comes from the city of Vichy in France.

The key ingredient in many Vichy products is Vichy Volcanic Water. It’s not ordinary water, but thermal water naturally enriched with minerals. Vichy focuses on developing products based on scientific research and aims to create formulas suitable for sensitive skin, including hypoallergenic products. Recently, the brand has also been working on making its formulas and products more environmentally friendly.


Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid - Product Claims

Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid is promoted as offering advanced UVA and UVB protection with an ultra-lightweight texture and an invisible finish. It is suitable for all skin tones and is designed to provide up to 24 hours of hydration thanks to UV-AQUA technology. It is also recommended as a sunscreen that can be used during activities such as workouts.

Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid - Packaging

This sunscreen arrived in a paper box with a rather small UV Aqua sunscreen bottle inside. The packaging design reminds me of LG’s sun fluids, such as the CNP sunscreen. At first, I thought you had to twist the cap open, but it turns out you’re not supposed to twist it - you simply squeeze the cap with your fingers to open it. I find this type of opening a little problematic because, when I open the bottle, I naturally squeeze the lower part as well, which sometimes causes the sunscreen to come out at the same time.

The applicator tip is very precise, and you need to gently squeeze the bottle to dispense the product.


Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid - Texture & Scent

I don’t know what you expect from Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid, but it’s Vichy - so, of course, there is a scent. It has a powdery, floral fragrance that comes with a white, milky texture that blends easily into the skin. I don’t notice any white cast, but it does leave a delicate moisturizing film on the skin.

Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid - UV Protection

Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid provides both UVB and UVA protection. It has SPF 50 and the UVA logo in a circle, which means the UVA protection is at least one-third of the SPF value. Vichy was also kind enough to include the PA rating, with this sunscreen achieving PA+++, meaning its UVA protection is likely in the range of 16 or higher.

Water is typically listed in cosmetic products as "Aqua" or "Eau". It acts as a solvent, but it is not the same as ordinary drinking water. In skincare products, water must meet strict purity standards to ensure it is free from impurities, including minerals, microorganisms, and other contaminants. In most formulations, water makes up the largest proportion of the product. Alcohol Denat. is a widely discussed ingredient in skincare. It can have both benefits and drawbacks, and its effects depend largely on the concentration and the overall formulation. As a solvent, alcohol helps dissolve certain ingredients and can contribute to a lightweight texture. It may also enhance the penetration of some substances into the skin, although this can potentially increase irritation as well. Alcohol also has antimicrobial properties and can help protect cosmetic formulations from microbial contamination. However, it can be drying, particularly when used in higher concentrations, and may cause irritation or discomfort in people with sensitive or compromised skin.

Diisopropyl Sebacate is a common emollient used in sunscreens to help create a lightweight, pleasant texture. It's also frequently found in lip products. Dicaprylyl Carbonate is a lightweight, dry emollient that gives the skin a smooth, velvety feel. It helps reduce moisture loss by forming a protective film on the skin and can improve the sensory properties and spreadability of cosmetic formulations. In hair care products, it can help condition the hair and reduce dryness, leaving it soft and smooth. It can also function as a solvent in some formulations.

Bis-Ethylhexyloxyphenol Methoxyphenyl Triazine is a difficult name to remember, which is why it is more commonly known as Tinosorb S. It is a newer-generation UV filter and is considered one of the most effective and photostable sunscreen ingredients available. Tinosorb S is an organic (chemical) UV filter that provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA (315–400 nm) and UVB (280–315 nm) rays. It has a high absorption capacity across a wide range of the UV spectrum, making it highly effective at protecting the skin from UV-induced damage. One of its greatest advantages is its excellent photostability. Unlike some older UV filters, Tinosorb S remains stable when exposed to sunlight. It can also help stabilize other UV filters in a sunscreen formula, reducing their photodegradation and improving the overall stability and effectiveness of the product. 

Ethylhexyl Triazone, also known as Uvinul T 150, is a highly effective organic UV filter commonly used in modern sunscreens. It provides broad UVB protection (280–320 nm), with a peak absorption at approximately 314 nm. It is one of the most powerful UVB filters available, offering high protection at relatively low concentrations. Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane, also known as Avobenzone, is an organic UV filter that provides broad UVA protection, covering both UVA II and UVA I wavelengths (approximately 320–400 nm), with an absorption peak around 357 nm. Avobenzone is relatively photounstable on its own, so it is typically combined with other UV filters or stabilizing ingredients to improve the stability of the formula. Isopropyl Myristate is a dry emollient that leaves the skin feeling soft and velvety. It helps reduce moisture loss by creating a delicate film on the skin's surface. It also improves the texture of a product, making it feel less sticky. In hair care products, it can help add shine to the hair. However, it may not be suitable for everyone, as it has a relatively high comedogenic potential. 

Glycerin, also known as Glycerol, is a humectant that helps attract and retain moisture in the skin. Depending on the product, it can be derived from natural sources or produced synthetically. It helps protect the skin from TEWL (transepidermal water loss), a natural process in which water evaporates from the skin's surface. Glycerin is one of the components of the NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor), which plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration. It is also widely used in hair care products due to its moisturizing properties. Glycerin is generally considered non-comedogenic and is unlikely to clog pores. Rather than irritating the skin, it can help support the skin barrier and reduce the feeling of dryness and irritation. Silica is a mineral-derived ingredient widely used in both makeup and skincare. It can absorb excess sebum, helping to reduce shine and create a more matte finish. It can also be used as a thickening or texture-modifying agent in cosmetic formulations.

Propylene Glycol Dicaprylate/Dicaprate is an emollient that improves the spreadability of a product, allowing it to glide more smoothly over the skin. It also functions as an emulsifier and surfactant. In its raw form, it is a yellow liquid. Potassium Cetyl Phosphate is a surfactant and emulsifier commonly used in oil-in-water formulations. It helps stabilize the formula and is frequently found in sunscreen products, where it can improve water resistance and support the formation of a more durable, even sunscreen film on the skin. Copernicia Cerifera (Carnauba) Wax is a plant-derived wax used as a film-forming and texture-enhancing ingredient in cosmetics. It can help create a protective layer on the skin and improve the consistency and stability of formulations. It is particularly common in lip products, where it helps provide structure and a smooth, protective finish. Carnauba Wax is not generally considered highly comedogenic, so I wouldn’t describe it as inherently more suitable for lips than facial skincare.

Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate, also known as Uvinul A Plus, is a highly photostable organic UVA filter commonly used in modern sunscreens. It protects the skin against UVA radiation (320–400 nm), with peak absorption at approximately 354 nm. Glyceryl Stearate is an emollient with emulsifying properties. It helps soften and smooth the skin while also helping to stabilize cosmetic formulations. PEG-100 Stearate is an oil-in-water emulsifier that helps blend oil and water into a stable, smooth emulsion. Perlite is a natural exfoliant and absorbent derived from volcanic rock. Rich in silica, it helps gently exfoliate the skin and scalp while absorbing excess oil, leaving them feeling smoother and refreshed. Hydroxyacetophenone is an antioxidant that also acts as a preservative booster, helping improve the effectiveness of the preservative system and enhance the formula's stability.

Triethanolamine is a pH adjuster that helps regulate the formula's acidity, ensuring the product remains stable and skin-friendly. Stearic Acid is a fatty acid that works as an emollient and emulsifier. It helps soften and smooth the skin while also helping to stabilize the formulation. Palmitic Acid is a fatty acid that acts as an emollient, helping soften and smooth the skin. It can also function as a co-emulsifier, helping stabilize oil-and-water formulations. Tocopherol is an antioxidant commonly known as Vitamin E. It is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps protect the skin from free radical damage and supports the skin's natural lipid barrier. It can also work synergistically with Vitamin C to boost antioxidant protection. Vitamin E may provide some photoprotective benefits, but it is not a substitute for sunscreen. Despite common claims, it does not act as a preservative or significantly improve scars. While some Vitamin E-rich formulations may feel too heavy for oily or acne-prone skin, Tocopherol itself is not universally considered pore-clogging.

Ascorbyl Glucoside is a stable, water-soluble derivative of Vitamin C. It has antioxidant and skin-brightening properties and can help improve the appearance of hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone. It may also support collagen synthesis, although the evidence varies between different forms of Vitamin C. Vitamin C can help reduce the appearance of dark spots and is often used in morning routines because its antioxidant properties can complement sunscreen. However, it should not replace sunscreen. Ascorbyl Glucoside can also be safely combined with niacinamide. Chlorphenesin is a synthetic preservative used in cosmetics to help prevent the growth of microorganisms and maintain the stability of the product. Silica Silylate is an anti-caking agent that helps prevent powders from clumping together. It also improves the texture and stability of cosmetic formulations.

Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer is a synthetic polymer with a high molecular weight. It is commonly used as a thickening and viscosity-controlling agent and helps stabilize emulsions in cosmetic formulations. Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate is a chelating agent that binds metal ions, helping improve the stability and effectiveness of the formula. Xanthan Gum is a natural polysaccharide that works as a thickener and stabilizer, helping give cosmetic products a smooth, consistent texture. Myristic Acid is a fatty acid that can act as an emulsifier, helping stabilize oil-and-water formulations. It also has cleansing properties and is commonly used in soap and surfactant-based products.

Butylene Glycol is a multifunctional ingredient commonly used in skincare and haircare products. It acts as a solvent and humectant, helping to dissolve ingredients while attracting moisture to the skin and hair. It can also enhance the penetration of active ingredients, improve a product's texture, and prevent formulations from drying out. Citric Acid  is an AHA (alpha hydroxy acid) that works as a gentle exfoliant. It is also used as a buffering ingredient to help adjust and maintain the pH of a formula. Caprylyl Glycol is a multifunctional ingredient with emollient and humectant properties. It helps keep the skin hydrated, improves the texture and feel of cosmetic formulations, and can contribute to a smooth, soft finish on the skin. Fragrance (Parfum) is a blend of aromatic compounds used to give cosmetic products their scent. It can cause allergic reactions or irritation in some individuals, especially those with sensitive or reactive skin.


How to use Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid?

Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid should be applied as the final step of your morning skincare routine, before makeup. I recommend using the two-finger method - squeeze two strips of sunscreen along your index and middle fingers - to ensure adequate coverage for the face and neck. Reapply every 2 - 3 hours, especially if you are outdoors, sweating, or exposed to water, as sunscreen can gradually wear off and migrate on the skin. 

How does Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid work?

One thing is certain - L'Oréal Group knows how to formulate sunscreens. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid is another strong addition to Vichy's sunscreen lineup. I've tried some of the brand's older formulas, including UV-Age and UV-Clear, and I especially enjoyed UV-Age. L'Oréal Group also owns brands such as La Roche-Posay, Garnier, Lancôme, L'Oréal Paris, Kiehl's, and CeraVe, all of which offer sunscreens that are popular with consumers around the world.

I also tested the new La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Air SPF50+ this year, but unfortunately it wasn't a good match for my skin. In contrast, Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

One of the standout features of this sunscreen is Vichy's UV-AQUA technology. According to the brand, this technology provides broad-spectrum UV protection while delivering long-lasting hydration and helping to even out the skin tone. I tested the untinted version, so I can't fully confirm the tone-evening claim, but I can definitely say that it keeps my skin well hydrated. It leaves a lightweight, velvety layer that helps prevent dehydration while staying comfortably in place throughout the day.

I was also surprised to see that Vichy recommends this sunscreen for both dry and oily skin. The formula is designed to help reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) while supporting sebum balance, thanks to ingredients such as vitamin E, vitamin Cg (Ascorbyl Glucoside), glycerin, and Vichy Volcanic Water.

Although this sunscreen is marketed toward people with an active lifestyle, Vichy still emphasizes the importance of frequent reapplication. I appreciate this because regular reapplication is one of the most important aspects of proper sun protection.

One of the main reasons I prefer this sunscreen over some La Roche-Posay formulas is that it doesn't sting my eyes, even though it contains alcohol. It's not a perfect sunscreen for my skin - I would personally prefer a bit more sebum control and slightly less hydration - but I think many different skin types will enjoy using it.

Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid - Skin Compability

Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid is recommended for all skin types, including sensitive skin. However, keep in mind that this product contains fragrance, which may not be tolerated by every skin type, especially very sensitive skin.

- The cap design isn't the most practical, as it's easy to accidentally squeeze out product while opening the bottle.
- Leaves a moisturizing finish rather than a truly matte one, so people with very oily skin may prefer stronger sebum control.
- Not a cruelty-free product.
- The bottle is relatively small, so frequent reapplication may mean you'll go through it fairly quickly.


Vichy Capital Soleil UV Aqua Hydrating Invisible Fluid - Alternatives

If you're looking for alternatives available on the European market, La Roche-Posay Anthelios UV Air SPF50+* may be a better choice if you find this sunscreen not moisturizing enough. If you have oily skin and prefer a more matte finish with better sebum control, La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Oil Control Fluid SPF50+* or Eucerin Oil Control Sun Gel-Cream Dry Touch SPF50+* are excellent options.

If you can't get any of these European sunscreens, I'd recommend a trio of Korean alternatives: Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-fresh Rice + B5 SPF50+ PA++++*, Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++*, and Skin1004 Madagascar Centella Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++. I've tried all three, and Beauty of Joseon and Skin1004 are my personal favorites.
