Do you need a scalp scrub? | Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub Review

Sunday, 27 September 2026

Haircare has become huge lately, and when it comes to K-beauty, few brands are as popular as Aromatica . Plenty of influencers swear by the Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub , but is this scalp scrub really that good? And do you actually need to exfoliate your scalp?

Disclosure: The products featured in this post were gifted by Stylevana, but all opinions expressed are my own.

Do you need to exfoliate your scalp?

I've been using scalp scrubs and scalp scalers religiously since 2018 - and I'm not joking, I have proof. I reviewed the old version of The Body Shop Tea Tree Purifying & Balancing Hair & Scalp Scrub back then, and I had a hard time when it was discontinued because finding a really good scalp scrub isn't easy. So, does your scalp actually need exfoliation? I'd say yes. The skin on your scalp isn't that different from the skin on your face - you deal with dead skin cells, oil, and product buildup on both. Exfoliating can help remove that buildup, but there's no need to go overboard. For most people, once or twice a week is enough, and you definitely don't need to exfoliate your scalp every single day. For me, scalp exfoliation is one of the most relaxing parts of my hair routine. The massage itself feels amazing, and while your hair strands are technically dead, your scalp and hair follicles are living tissue. A gentle scalp massage can help stimulate blood flow to the scalp, so it's a nice bonus alongside the cleansing benefits.

What scalp exfoliators are available on the market and how do they work?

Scalp exfoliators are similar to the ones you use on your face. There are physical exfoliators based on sugar or salt, enzyme exfoliators, and chemical exfoliators. Physical scrubs were probably the first to become popular, but brands have since developed more advanced formulas, including enzyme scrubs and chemical exfoliators with AHA, BHA, and PHA.

How often should I exfoliate my scalp?

Scalp exfoliation can be great, but don’t go overboard. Using an exfoliating product once or twice a week should be enough, whether you’re using a physical, enzyme, or chemical scrub.

Does rosemary work on scalp and hair growth?

Rosemary is a surprisingly big topic in the scientific literature, and the answer might be a little disappointing. Michelle from Lab Muffin has written a great article on this topic. I wouldn’t say that rosemary is bad for your scalp, but I also wouldn’t expect miracles from it. There are many different causes of hair loss, and for some of them, professional treatment is going to be much more effective than relying on haircare alone. Androgenetic alopecia, for example, may require appropriate medical care and treatment. With telogen effluvium, you may not need to do as much to your scalp or haircare routine, as the condition is often temporary and addressing the underlying trigger is more important. There are ingredients with stronger evidence for specific scalp and hair concerns than rosemary, but that doesn’t mean you need to avoid rosemary altogether. It can be perfectly fine in haircare products unless you’re sensitive to rosemary or essential oils. In that case, it’s worth choosing products that are free from both.

Meet the brand: Aromatica

AROMATICA is a Korean skincare and beauty brand founded in 2004. The brand is inspired by aromatherapy and focuses on using natural essential oils in its products. AROMATICA has obtained certifications such as ECOCERT, COSMOS, and EWG VERIFIED™ for selected products and is also registered as a Vegan Society partner. The brand follows vegan formulas and is known for its focus on natural ingredients, aromatherapy, and sustainability.

Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub - Packaging

Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub comes in a plastic tube. The good thing is that the tube is transparent, so you can see how much product is left. It also has a pointed tip that makes application easier and allows you to apply the scrub directly to the scalp.

Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub - Texture & Scent

The texture is rich and slightly sticky. Before checking the ingredients, I thought it contained sugar rather than salt. You can clearly feel the salt particles in the formula. The scent reminds me of menthol, which is actually one of the ingredients in this product.

Is Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub vegan-friendly?

Aromatica is a vegan and cruelty-free brand, so Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub is also vegan-friendly.

Sodium Chloride is simply the common salt we use in everyday life. In skincare, it can function as a viscosity-controlling agent, helping to thicken certain formulations. It can also be used as a physical exfoliant in some products, although its relatively large and irregular crystals may be too abrasive for sensitive skin. Sea Salt is a mineral-rich ingredient that can act as a physical exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and smooth the skin. It also has antistatic properties and is commonly used in hair styling products to add texture and create beachy waves and curls. Sea salt baths can feel relaxing, while salt-based soaks may temporarily help reduce the feeling of tired or swollen legs. Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract is a source of compounds such as camphor, pinene, terpineol, and rosmarinic acid. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. It may help soothe the scalp and support overall scalp health.

Water is typically listed in cosmetic products as "Aqua" or "Eau". It acts as a solvent, but it is not the same as ordinary drinking water. In skincare products, water must meet strict purity standards to ensure it is free from impurities, including minerals, microorganisms, and other contaminants. In most formulations, water makes up the largest proportion of the product. Pinus Densiflora Leaf Extract is an extract from the Japanese red pine (Akamatsu) or Korean red pine (Sonamu). It has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and may help soothe the skin. It also shows tyrosinase-inhibiting activity, which may help reduce melanin production and support a more even-looking skin tone. Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate is a mild anionic surfactant derived from fatty acids found in coconut oil. It helps cleanse the skin by removing dirt, oil, and impurities and is commonly used in gentle facial cleansers.

Glycerin, also known as Glycerol, is a humectant that helps attract and retain moisture in the skin. Depending on the product, it can be derived from natural sources or produced synthetically. It helps protect the skin from TEWL (transepidermal water loss), a natural process in which water evaporates from the skin's surface. Glycerin is one of the components of the NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor), which plays an important role in maintaining skin hydration. It is also widely used in hair care products due to its moisturizing properties. Glycerin is generally considered non-comedogenic and is unlikely to clog pores. Rather than irritating the skin, it can help support the skin barrier and reduce the feeling of dryness and irritation. Coco-Betaine is a mild amphoteric surfactant commonly used in hair and skincare products. It helps cleanse the skin and hair while boosting and stabilizing foam. In hair care, it can also have antistatic and conditioning properties, helping reduce static and improve manageability.

Lauryl Betaine is a mild surfactant that helps create foam. It also has antistatic properties and can function as an emulsifier in cosmetic formulations. Xanthan Gum is a natural polysaccharide that works as a thickener and stabilizer, helping give cosmetic products a smooth, consistent texture. Propanediol, also known as a natural glycol, is a humectant and solvent commonly used as an alternative to propylene glycol. It helps dissolve ingredients, improves the texture and spreadability of formulations, and provides additional moisturizing benefits by attracting water to the skin. It can also enhance the delivery and performance of certain active ingredients.

Ethylhexylglycerin is a multifunctional ingredient used as a preservative and preservative booster in cosmetic formulations. It has mild moisturizing and antimicrobial properties, helping to keep products stable while supporting the effectiveness of other preservatives. Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Oil is an essential oil that contains camphor. It has antimicrobial properties and may help support microcirculation. This ingredient is commonly used in products targeting acne-prone skin, cellulite, oily scalps, and dandruff-prone scalps. It also functions as a fragrance ingredient, adding a characteristic herbal scent to cosmetic formulations. Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract is an extract obtained from the root of ginger. In cosmetics, it is valued for its antioxidant and soothing properties and may help protect the skin from oxidative stress. Ginger has been used in traditional medicine for centuries and is also widely used as a culinary spice. In traditional medicine, it has been used to relieve nausea and menstrual discomfort.

Ocimum Basilicum (Basil) Extract contains antioxidant compounds and can be a source of vitamins such as A, C, and K. It has antimicrobial and soothing properties and may help protect the skin from oxidative stress. Ocimum Sanctum Leaf Extract, also known as Tulsi Leaf Extract or Holy Basil Extract, has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. It may help calm irritated skin and support the skin’s natural defenses. Origanum Vulgare (Oregano) Leaf Extract has antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. It contains compounds such as thymol, carvacrol, apigenin, and quercetin. Its composition can vary depending on the type of extract and the extraction method used.

Bifida Ferment Lysate is a probiotic and a product of the fermentation process. Bifida Ferment Lysate strengthens the skin and its natural microbiome. Bifida ferment lysate can make sensitive skin secure and less susceptible to the negative influence of external factors. This ingredient can help fix the damage caused by UV radiation or fix damaged DNA. Lactobacillus Ferment Lysate is a probiotic-derived ingredient used in skincare. Ferments have become popular in recent years because of their potential benefits for sensitive and compromised skin. This ingredient helps soothe the skin and supports a healthy skin microbiome.

Caffeine is an antioxidant that can have beneficial effects on the skin. It may help improve circulation and reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles around the eyes. It's also commonly used in products targeting cellulite, although the effects are temporary. In hair care, topical caffeine may help support hair growth and is sometimes recommended as an ingredient for people experiencing androgenetic alopecia. However, more research is needed to confirm how effective it is. Panthenol, also known as vitamin B5, is a humectant that helps retain moisture and reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL). It has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties, supporting the skin barrier and helping with irritation and the healing process. It is especially useful for sensitive or damaged skin, including after sun exposure. In haircare, panthenol helps hydrate, soften, and improve hair manageability.

Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil is an emollient rich in oleic acid and vitamin E. It helps soften and smooth the skin and can help reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL) by forming a protective layer on the skin’s surface. Menthol is an ingredient with a characteristic peppermint-like scent, but in cosmetics, it’s not just about fragrance - it also creates a cooling sensation on the skin. It activates cold-sensitive receptors, making the skin feel cooler without necessarily lowering its actual temperature. Menthol also has antimicrobial properties, including antibacterial and antifungal activity, but it can cause irritation, especially in sensitive skin. Despite this, it is commonly used in cosmetic products for its refreshing and cooling effect, particularly in scalp and hair care products.

Salicylic Acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) with exfoliating and keratolytic properties. It helps loosen and remove dead skin cells and can normalize the keratinization process. Unlike water-soluble AHAs, Salicylic Acid is oil-soluble, which allows it to penetrate into sebum-rich pores and help unclog them. It also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it particularly useful for acne-prone skin. If you struggle with ingrown hairs or keratosis pilaris, Salicylic Acid can also be a helpful ingredient to look for. Cedrus Atlantica (Atlas Cedar) Bark Oil is an essential oil obtained from the Atlas cedar. It contains compounds such as cedrol and cedrene and has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties. It is also used as a fragrance ingredient in cosmetic products. Some cedarwood oils may contain compounds that can increase skin sensitivity to UV radiation, so the phototoxic potential depends on the composition of the specific oil.

Abies Sibirica Oil is an essential oil obtained from the Siberian fir. It has a characteristic fresh, woody scent and is a natural source of compounds such as α-pinene. It exhibits antibacterial and antifungal properties, making it a popular ingredient in products for oily and blemish-prone skin. Due to its antioxidant and soothing properties, it may help reduce the appearance of blemishes and support skin comfort. Some studies also suggest it may help improve skin elasticity. However, as with many essential oils, it may cause irritation in sensitive skin and should be used with caution. Cupressus Sempervirens (Cypress) Oil is an essential oil obtained from the Italian cypress. In traditional medicine, cypress has been used for its astringent and anti-seborrheic properties. It is sometimes used in skincare products formulated for oily and blemish-prone skin.

Chamomilla Recutita, also known as German chamomile, is a plant that has been used in traditional medicine for centuries. It is a natural source of compounds such as chamazulene and bisabolol, both of which are valued in skincare for their soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract is commonly used in cosmetic products to help soothe irritated skin and reduce the appearance of redness. Although it is generally well tolerated, it may cause allergic reactions in some individuals, particularly those who are allergic to plants in the daisy (Asteraceae) family. Beyond skincare, chamomile is also well known as a natural ingredient used to enhance and brighten blonde hair.

Verbena Officinalis Extract, also known as Common Vervain Extract, has astringent and skin-conditioning properties. Common vervain has been used in traditional medicine for centuries for various complaints, including infections and inflammation. Styrax Benzoin Gum is a resinous, film-forming ingredient that helps create a protective film on the skin and is also used as a fragrance ingredient. It has a sweet, warm, balsamic scent that may remind you of vanilla. Limonene is a fragrance ingredient that gives products a fresh, citrusy scent reminiscent of lemons or oranges. It may also enhance the penetration of other substances into the skin, but it can be irritating or sensitizing, especially for sensitive skin. Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride is a cationic polymer with antistatic and conditioning properties. It helps reduce static, makes hair easier to comb, and improves softness and manageability. It can also help ingredients deposit more evenly onto the hair. Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract, also known as neem leaf extract, is a botanical ingredient known for its antibacterial and soothing properties. It is commonly used in skincare formulations designed to support clearer, healthier-looking skin. Melia Azadirachta Flower Extract, also known as neem flower extract, is a botanical ingredient with antioxidant, antibacterial, and soothing properties. It helps calm the skin while supporting its natural defense against environmental stressors. Coccinia Indica (Ivy Gourd) Fruit Extract may have moisturizing and skin-conditioning properties. It can help leave the skin and hair feeling softer and more hydrated. Amber Powder is a powder that works as an exfoliant, but it also has deodorizing properties. Solanum Melongena (Eggplant) Fruit Extract is a source of antioxidant compounds that can help protect the skin from oxidative stress. It may also have soothing and skin-conditioning properties. Curcuma Longa (Turmeric) Root Extract, also known as Turmeric Root Extract, is an ingredient worth knowing if you have acne-prone or irritated skin. Turmeric has been used in traditional medicine for centuries, and you probably know it best as a spice. So, what makes it interesting in skincare? It contains antioxidant compounds and has soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. It may help reduce the appearance of redness and calm irritated skin. Some research also suggests that turmeric extracts may be beneficial for blemish-prone skin and may help with excess sebum, signs of skin aging, and uneven pigmentation, although the effects depend on the type and concentration of the extract used.

Corallina Officinalis Extract, also known as red algae extract, is rich in antioxidant compounds and minerals. It has soothing and skin-conditioning properties and may help protect the skin from oxidative stress. It may also help support the skin’s moisture levels and improve the appearance of signs of skin aging. Disodium EDTA is a chelating agent that neutralizes metal ions, preventing them from destabilizing the formula or accelerating oxidation. This helps maintain the product's stability, effectiveness, and shelf life. 1,2-Hexanediol is a synthetic solvent and preservative booster. It helps protect products from microorganisms by enhancing the effectiveness of other preservatives. It also has humectant properties, helping to keep the skin hydrated, and is generally well tolerated by the skin.

How to use Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub?

Aromatica recommends using an appropriate amount of Rosemary Scalp Scrub before shampooing or instead of shampoo. From my experience, it’s better to use a scalp scrub first and follow with shampoo, or mix the scrub with your shampoo. The product should always be applied to wet hair. Use max. twice a week.

How does Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub work?

I have mixed feelings about physical scrubs because they’re not generally the first choice for exfoliating the skin, but what about the scalp? Part of me says no, but there was a time when salt-based scalp scrubs were some of the only options available, and they actually helped me a lot. Nowadays, however, I prefer to avoid them and opt for chemical exfoliators instead.

It’s not a bad product, but if you have a problematic or sensitive scalp like mine, using a product containing relatively large salt particles can potentially be more irritating than helpful. If you want to try it, avoid applying too much pressure when massaging it into your scalp.

Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub contains sea salt from the Dead Sea, a hypersaline lake bordered by Israel and Jordan, with part of its western shore also bordering the West Bank. The Dead Sea is known for its exceptionally high concentration of salts and minerals and has a long history of wellness and climatotherapy, particularly for people with psoriasis.

According to Aromatica’s promotional materials, the salt used in this scrub comes from the Israeli side of the Dead Sea. Dead Sea salts are widely used in skincare and wellness products because of their distinctive mineral composition. Whether the ingredient’s origin matters to you when choosing a product is, of course, a personal decision.

Aromatica places a strong focus on ingredients and environmental considerations, which is why the packaging is recyclable. However, recyclable in Korea doesn’t necessarily mean recyclable in your country, so it’s worth checking your local recycling guidelines before disposing of the tube.

Aromatica uses rosemary, basil, panthenol, oregano, and ginger to condition the hair, while fermented ingredients and caffeine are included to support a healthy scalp. The exfoliating ingredients are sea salt and salicylic acid. I love salicylic acid for scalp care because it can be really helpful, but a combination of physical and chemical exfoliation is relatively uncommon. It’s not necessarily a bad combination, but it does make me even more aware that there’s no need to apply pressure when using this scrub. The BHA can help with buildup and clogged follicles without aggressive physical exfoliation.

I find the texture a little too sticky, but it’s not a major issue. Personally, I prefer to mix it with shampoo. I haven’t experienced any allergic reactions, and it works as expected. The menthol makes it feel really refreshing. I enjoy menthol in scalp products because of that cooling, relaxing sensation, and it leaves my scalp feeling particularly clean.

One thing to keep in mind is that you need plenty of water when rinsing this product out. Make sure you rinse thoroughly and remove all of the scrub from your scalp and hair.

Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub - Alternatives

Although Stylevana doesn’t have my favourite scalp scaler from Labo-H, it has Scalp Strengthening Scaler which is still a salt-based alternative. Aromatica has another option which is Rosemary Salt Scrub Shampoo. If you prefer chemical exfoliation for your scalp then Seapuri Scalpy Bubble Tonic is based on salicylic acid.

Where to get Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub and how much does it cost?

Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub currently costs $14.00 for 165 g at Stylevana, while the regular price is $20.00. You can also use my code INF10BETW to get an additional discount on your Stylevana purchase. Overall, Aromatica Rosemary Scalp Scrub is an interesting option if you have an oily scalp that tends to build up excess sebum and product residue. I like that it combines physical exfoliation with salicylic acid, although the salt particles and essential oils make me more cautious about recommending it for sensitive or irritated scalps. Personally, I prefer gentler chemical exfoliation, but if you enjoy scalp scrubs, this can be worth considering - just remember that more scrubbing doesn’t necessarily mean a cleaner or healthier scalp.
