Why is Vitamin C so common in skincare products?

With all the recent hype surrounding retinol and retinal, many people seem to have forgotten about vitamin C. However, there are plenty of reasons why vitamin C remains one of the most valuable active ingredients in skincare. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps neutralize free radicals and protect the skin from oxidative stress. It stimulates the production of collagen types I and III, helping to maintain firmer, healthier-looking skin, while also supporting the skin's natural repair processes. Regular use can help prevent premature photoaging caused by UV exposure. One of vitamin C's greatest advantages is that it complements sunscreen. While it doesn't increase your sunscreen's SPF, it provides additional protection against UV-induced free radical damage, making it an excellent ingredient for your morning skincare routine. Vitamin C can also help improve both post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) and post-inflammatory erythema (PIE). Although PIH is generally easier to target, PIE often requires ingredients with soothing and anti-inflammatory properties rather than relying solely on tyrosinase inhibitors. This is an area where many skincare brands could do a better job of educating consumers. Another benefit of vitamin C is how well it pairs with other active ingredients. It works especially well with vitamin E and ferulic acid, which enhance its stability and antioxidant performance. It can also be combined with niacinamide, despite the persistent myth that the two ingredients should not be used together. Finally, it's important to remember that not all forms of vitamin C are the same. Pure L-ascorbic acid is the most extensively studied form, but many stable derivatives are available as well. Each form differs in terms of stability, penetration, potency, and suitability for different skin types, so choosing the right one can make a significant difference in your skincare routine.

Vitamin C forms in skincare

Vitamin C in skincare comes in different forms. The most common one is ascorbic acid, also known as L-ascorbic acid. It is a water-soluble ingredient that requires a pH lower than 3.5 to remain effective. It is usually used in concentrations of up to 20% and is a great ingredient for supporting collagen production in the skin. If you had to choose between a collagen product and vitamin C, I would generally choose vitamin C - but it really depends on your skin needs and goals. This antioxidant helps enhance the skin’s natural defense against UV-induced damage, which is why we like to use it in the morning before applying sunscreen. Vitamin C works especially well when combined with ingredients such as niacinamide, vitamin E, or ferulic acid. It is also a great option for helping to reduce the appearance of dark spots and uneven skin tone. However, L-ascorbic acid is an unstable form of vitamin C. It is best stored in a dark glass container and, ideally, kept in the refrigerator. Once opened, it is usually recommended to use it within a few months. It oxidizes quickly, and if the product changes to a brownish color, it is better not to use it. Unfortunately, due to its low pH, L-ascorbic acid may not be the best choice for very sensitive skin.

Other popular forms of vitamin C include Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP) and Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP). Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a more stable and less irritating form of vitamin C compared to L-ascorbic acid. However, it has weaker antioxidant activity. It can be a better choice for sensitive skin, especially for those who cannot tolerate low-pH vitamin C products. Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is also a more stable derivative of vitamin C and is typically used in formulas with a higher pH, which makes it gentler on the skin. It can help improve the appearance of pigmentation and support collagen production. It is also a great option for acne-prone skin due to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate and Ascorbyl Glucoside are other forms of vitamin C. Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate is an oil-soluble derivative, while Ascorbyl Glucoside is a water-soluble derivative. Both are more stable than L-ascorbic acid and can work very effectively in skincare formulas. 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is another stable form of vitamin C that can be used in both water- and oil-based formulations. It is a great option for sensitive skin because it is generally well tolerated. It works very well for my skin too, but it is not the most affordable vitamin C derivative.

Laneige is a brand with over 30 years of tradition. Founded in 1994, the brand celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024. Naturally, fans expected special collaborations, the return of iconic products, and other exciting launches. Laneige is owned by Amorepacific, and its name comes from the French phrase La Neige, meaning "snow."

Over the years, Laneige has consistently introduced innovative products that have become fan favorites. 2019 was a milestone year, with the launch of the Cream Skin line, new additions to the Water Bank range, the brand's expansion into Europe, the Glow Makeup Serum, and the Cica Sleeping Mask. 2021 was just as exciting, bringing the introduction of the retinol line. In 2024, Laneige unveiled the new Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Creams in three different versions. The momentum continued into 2025 with the release of new lip care sets and the introduction of the Perfect Renew 3X Signature Serum to the U.S. market. The brand also launched Matcha and Taro Lip Sleeping Masks, an updated Cream Skin formula, and several new sunscreen products. Laneige's philosophy revolves around water science and skincare technology. The brand is known for creating products that keep the skin deeply hydrated while addressing a variety of other skin concerns. However, Laneige is not just about skincare. The Two Tone Bar Lipstick, worn by actress Song Hye-kyo in the K-drama Descendants of the Sun, sold out almost immediately. Personally, I remember the Two Tone Bar Lipstick best from Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo, starring Lee Sung-kyung. Both actresses also appeared in Laneige commercials.

Actress Kim Yoo-jung has been one of the faces of Laneige, promoting products such as the Radian-C Cream. Laneige is a relatively affordable brand with elegant yet playful packaging. Its design seems to appeal primarily to teenagers and young adults. I like to think of Laneige as the perfect transition between Etude House and Sulwhasoo - as if Etude House were a teenage girl and Sulwhasoo a sophisticated, mature woman.

For me, Vitamin C has a characteristic, strong scent, so one of the reasons I enjoy Laneige Radian-C Double Active Brightening Essence is that it doesn’t have that typical oxidized Vitamin C smell. However, it is a scented product, so even though the scent isn’t unpleasant, it’s important to remember that this is not a fragrance-free formula.

Don’t expect it to be a serum-like essence texture, it’s more lightweight and it gets absorbed quickly.

It helps address issues such as wrinkles, acne, uneven skin texture, and enlarged pores, while promoting collagen synthesis. Niacinamide makes the skin barrier stronger. What works for you might not work for someone else.

Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Flower Extract is a brightening ingredient with anti-oxidant properties. It boosts blood circulation. It's a source of quercetin and kinobeon A. Dextrin is an emulsifier with stabilizing properties. Limonene is a scent ingredient, and it makes the product smell like lemon or orange. Limonene can enhance the penetration of other substances, but at the same time, it can irritate the skin. Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/​VP Copolymer is a polymer with thickening properties. Xanthan Gum is a polysaccharide that works as a thickener.  Cholesterol is a lipid with a crucial role in our skin. This ingredient makes sure that our skin barrier is healthy. It can also work as a stabilizer. Thymol Trimethoxycinnamate is a patented ingredient by Amore Pacific. It's hidden under the name Melasolv. This substance is supposed to help with blemishes, pigmentation and uneven skin. Amore Pacific wanted to create a safe formula that safely fights pigmentation disorders. It's rich in amino acids, peptides, and polysaccharides that help increase stratum corneum hydration and improve skin smoothness. Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid is a lower-molecular-weight humectant. Not every molecule can penetrate the skin's surface, and smaller hyaluronic acid molecules can reach deeper layers of the skin to help deliver moisture. It is a natural polymer that binds water and helps maintain skin hydration while reducing TEWL (transepidermal water loss). Sodium Hyaluronate Crosspolymer is a derivative of Sodium Hyaluronate. It is an effective moisturizer that helps bind and retain water in the skin, providing long-lasting hydration. Hyaluronic Acid is an ingredient loved by many skincare enthusiasts. It naturally occurs in the skin, where it belongs to a group of molecules called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). In simple terms, it is a long polysaccharide made of sugar molecules, which allows it to attract and hold onto water. Like other humectants, hyaluronic acid helps maintain skin hydration by binding moisture. One molecule of hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid is available in different molecular weights, and smaller molecules are generally able to penetrate the skin more easily, while larger molecules mainly work on the skin's surface to help prevent moisture loss. Sodium Acetylated Hyaluronate is related to sodium hyaluronate. It boosts moisture in the skin and elasticity. It helps prevent skin from TEWL (transepidermal water loss). 

How to use Laneige Radian-C Double Active Brightening Essence?

Before using Laneige Radian-C Double Active Brightening Essence for the first time, activate the formula by holding the silver center section with one hand and the glass bottle with the other. Turn the silver section clockwise while twisting the glass bottle counterclockwise, then shake the bottle gently to mix the two phases. After activation, use the essence in both your morning and evening skincare routine. Apply it after toner and before your serum.

How does Laneige Radian-C Double Active Brightening Essence work?

I really enjoy Laneige Radian-C Double Active Brightening Essence - so much that I ended up buying another bottle. I love the Radian-C series and have tried the entire line. However, I didn’t particularly like Laneige Radian-C Advanced Effector, so the Double Active Brightening Essence turned out to be a better option for me. This product combines a Collagen Essence containing 81.2% Collagen Complex with Carnosine and Adenosine, which are included to support skin firmness and provide anti-glycation benefits. Glycation is a natural process in which sugar molecules react with proteins and lipids without the help of enzymes. In the skin, sugars can bind to collagen and elastin, forming advanced glycation end products (AGEs). These compounds make collagen fibers stiffer and less elastic, contributing to wrinkles, loss of firmness, and other visible signs of skin aging. While glycation occurs naturally as we age, certain lifestyle factors can accelerate the process. Melasolv is a brightening and depigmenting ingredient with a rather interesting mechanism of action. While many well-known brightening ingredients work by inhibiting tyrosinase, Melasolv has also been shown to promote the degradation of melanosomes through autophagy, the cell’s natural recycling process. Melanosomes are specialized structures responsible for producing, storing, and transporting melanin. In other words, Melasolv can stimulate a process called melanophagy, in which melanosomes are targeted for degradation through the autophagy pathway. Research has shown that Melasolv reduced melanin content and promoted melanosome degradation in experimental models.

That’s only part of the story, though. Research has also shown that Melasolv can suppress the increase in melanin stimulated by α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH), a signaling molecule that promotes melanogenesis.

According to Laneige this product is suitable for sensitive skin, and I have to admit, as a person with sensitive skin, I enjoyed this formula!

I was positively surprised that Laneige Radian-C Double Active Brightening Essence focuses on anti-glycation, so far I only recognize one brand that focus on this topic and it’s Nivea. Personally, my only problem with this product is low availability, I don’t see it in Sephora and I literally got the last bottle from Notino, the previous bottle I bought back when Shopee was still available in Poland.

Does it brighten the skin? Yes, but it won’t happen overnight, with pigmentation you need 2-3 months to see the effects, but I do noticed that my skin looked brighter when I was using this serum that’s why I’ve decided to repurchase it. It’s way better than Laneige Radian-C Spot Ampoule and Laneige Radian-C Advanced Effector.

For those looking for Korean vitamin C products without ingredients of animal origin, Klairs Freshly Juiced Vitamin Drop* and Isntree Hyper Vitamin C 23 Serum* are worth considering. However, neither Klairs nor Isntree is a fully vegan brand, so it’s worth checking the individual product if avoiding all animal-derived ingredients is important to you.
