After K-beauty took the global beauty industry by storm, it's time to give C-beauty its moment in the spotlight. Chinese beauty brands have been gaining attention for their innovative formulas, interesting ingredients, advanced skincare technology, and increasingly sophisticated approach to product development. One brand that's particularly worth watching is PROYA 珀莱雅, which is finally making its way into the US market and is now available at Ulta Beauty.

If you're familiar with Asian skincare, you might have already come across the brand, but if PROYA is new to you, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with it. What makes this Chinese skincare brand so popular in its home market? Which products are worth looking into, and how does its approach to skincare compare with the Korean and Japanese brands we're already familiar with? Let's take a closer look at PROYA and find out why C-beauty deserves more attention.
Is C-beauty the next big thing?
The answer is yes! We've already seen how much people love C-beauty makeup brands like Florasis, Flower Knows, Girlcult, and Judydoll. Chinese fragrance brands are also gaining attention, with names like 观夏 To Summer, BEAST 野兽派, and 闻献 DOCUMENTS increasingly appearing on Instagram. So, it was only a matter of time before C-beauty skincare started gaining popularity, too. Over the past few years, we've also seen a shift in how China is perceived internationally. For a long time, China was often portrayed through outdated stereotypes, but the growing popularity of social media platforms like Xiaohongshu (REDnote) has given people a different perspective on the country and its culture. These platforms offer a glimpse into China's modern lifestyle, technology, beauty industry, and consumer trends. We also can't overlook the influence of trends like Chinamaxxing, which have helped bring Chinese culture and brands into more international conversations. As a result, people are becoming increasingly curious about what Chinese beauty brands have to offer. Are all C-beauty products unsafe?
You may have come across headlines about Chinese beauty products containing mercury, lead, or methanol. Headlines like these tend to attract attention, especially when consumers choose Chinese shopping platforms over local retailers selling similar products at two or even three times the price. However, what these stories often leave out is that the substances were found in counterfeit products, not necessarily in products made by the original brands. Not every shopping platform is equally safe, and even affordable, well-known beauty brands can be counterfeited. This means that finding authentic C-beauty products can sometimes be challenging. Fortunately, brands like Proya are becoming easier to access internationally, with products available through retailers such as YesStyle and, more recently, Ulta Beauty in the US. One of the safest ways to shop is to look for a brand's official store, as Flower Knows does, for example. If you're shopping on marketplaces like AliExpress, check whether the brand has an official store on the platform rather than relying on individual third-party sellers. Another option is to shop through Taobao using a reputable proxy service, although it's still important to verify the seller and product authenticity. The rule is simple - go for legit sources.Meet the brand: Proya
Proya was founded in 2003 by Hou Juncheng, with the ambition of creating Chinese beauty products that could compete with established international brands. Initially focused on skincare, particularly hydration, the brand gradually expanded its product portfolio and distribution network across China, becoming one of the country's major cosmetics companies. Today, Proya places a strong emphasis on scientific research, technological innovation, and product efficacy. Rather than relying solely on marketing trends, the brand invests in its own research and development capabilities, supported by an international R&D network with centres in Hangzhou, Shanghai, and Paris. This allows Proya to combine insights from different markets with cosmetic science and formulation development, with the aim of creating effective skincare products.Proya Skincare Lines
Proya has developed several skincare collections, each targeting different skin concerns and incorporating the brand's proprietary technologies alongside established cosmetic ingredients. From anti-ageing and brightening to hydration and skin-barrier support, its portfolio covers a broad range of skincare needs. Here are some of the main collections worth getting to know: - Advanced Firming Nourishing Series – An anti-ageing collection formulated with peptides and retinoids to address visible signs of ageing, including wrinkles, loss of firmness and uneven skin texture. It combines established skincare actives with PROYA's formulation technologies. Selected products are available at Ulta Beauty. - Advanced Original Repair Series – A collection built around PROYA's proprietary BMs-Tech technology, which focuses on the skin's basement membrane and its role in maintaining healthy skin structure. The range is designed to support skin repair, hydration and barrier function. Selected products are also available at Ulta Beauty. - Double Effect Brightening Series – A brightening collection that combines proprietary technologies with science-based formulations to address uneven skin tone, dullness and pigmentation. It focuses on one of the common concerns associated with skin ageing: the development of dark spots and uneven pigmentation. - Sun-screening and Whitening Series – A collection combining UV protection with brightening-oriented skincare. PROYA emphasises gentle formulations, including options intended for sensitive skin. Individual formulas should still be assessed separately, particularly when it comes to fragrance and potential irritants. - Revitalized Hydrating Essence Series – A moisturising collection developed to provide hydration and improve skin comfort, particularly for dry and dehydrated skin. - Inaugurating Nourishing Series – A nourishing anti-ageing collection designed primarily for mature and dry skin. Its formulations focus on addressing wrinkles, dryness and loss of firmness while providing additional nourishment. - Inaugurating Intensive Series – An advanced anti-ageing collection featuring PROYA's CELLERGY PRO™ complex. This technology draws on research into mitochondrial function and cellular energy metabolism, with the aim of supporting skin vitality and addressing visible signs of ageing. - CELLERGY PRO™ – Although not a separate skincare line, this is worth mentioning because it represents one of PROYA's proprietary technologies. The complex incorporates several ingredients, including wheat germ extract, quercetin, Mirabilis jalapa extract, vitamin K2 and adenosine. PROYA's research focuses on mitochondrial function, cellular energy metabolism and collagen synthesis. - PROYA MED – A professional skincare range focused on skin repair and recovery. It includes products designed to support compromised skin barriers and sensitive skin, as well as skincare needs following aesthetic procedures. Products from this line are available at Ulta. - PROYA MEN – A dedicated skincare collection developed around men's daily skincare needs, with products addressing cleansing, hydration and general skin maintenance.Proya At Ulta
Not all PROYA products and skincare lines are available at Ulta Beauty yet, but this shouldn't come as a surprise. After all, the US and Chinese markets have different cosmetic regulations and requirements, which can affect product availability and market entry. It also seems that PROYA is taking a gradual approach to its US expansion, starting with some of its best-selling products before potentially introducing a wider selection of its portfolio.PROYA Advanced Firming Nourishing Rejuvenating Lotion*
Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, Isopentyldiol, PEG/PPG-14/7 Dimethyl Ether, Betaine, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Panthenol, PPG-26-Buteth-26, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Mannitol, Glyceryl Glucoside, Tromethamine, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glyceryl Acrylate/Acrylic Acid Copolymer, PVM/MA Copolymer, Sodium Polyglutamate, Fragrance/Parfum, Caprylyl Glycol, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Sodium PCA, Acetyl Hexapeptide-1, Hydrolyzed Collagen, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-11, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9, Erythritol, Chondrus Crispus Powder, Xanthan Gum, Ethylhexylglycerin, Benzoic Acid, Sorbic Acid, Nonapeptide-1, Hexapeptide-9This collection is often referred to as the Ruby line, thanks to its distinctive red packaging. One thing I wish PROYA would do when introducing its products to the US market is provide more of the scientific and research-backed information available on its Chinese platforms. The brand has quite a lot of interesting technology and formulation research behind its products, and I think international customers would benefit from having access to the same level of detail. First, don't let the word lotion confuse you. In this case, you can treat it as a toner. If you've used K-beauty or J-beauty products before, you might already be familiar with this naming convention: lotion, skin, toner and even essence can sometimes refer to similar categories of lightweight, water-based skincare products. Think of it as a difference in regional beauty terminology rather than an entirely different product type. You can incorporate this lotion into your daily routine as an additional layer of hydration, applying it directly with your hands or a cotton pad. Another option is to soak a few cotton pads with the product and leave them on your skin for several minutes as a DIY hydrating mask. The formula features a six-peptide complex and collagen, making it particularly interesting for those looking to combine hydration with an anti-ageing-focused skincare routine. Peptides are used in cosmetic formulations to target visible signs of ageing, while collagen primarily functions as a conditioning and moisturising ingredient when applied topically. The formula also incorporates a Barrier Lipid Complex, designed to reinforce the skin barrier and improve moisture retention. This is particularly relevant for mature skin, as age-related changes can affect barrier function, potentially contributing to increased dryness and reduced skin comfort. Another interesting aspect of this formula is its combination of retinol, HPR (Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate) and peptides. By bringing together two retinoid ingredients with peptide-based actives, PROYA targets several visible signs of ageing, including wrinkles, loss of firmness and uneven skin texture. The addition of barrier-supporting lipids helps complement this approach by providing additional care for skin that may be more prone to dryness and sensitivity. Rather than focusing exclusively on wrinkle reduction, this essence combines an anti-ageing approach with ingredients intended to support the skin's overall condition. PRICE: $57/1.01 oz at Ulta*

This serum has a beautiful, distinctive texture created by approximately 7,500 hydrating micro-beads suspended in a bi-phase formula that combines water-based ingredients with nourishing oils. The formula brings together hyaluronic acid and emollient ingredients to provide hydration while helping soften and condition the skin.
PROYA has also included one of the ingredients gaining considerable attention in skincare lately: PDRN (0.02%). However, it isn't the main focus of this formula. The real highlights are the combination of cyclic peptides, 3D collagen, sea fennel extract, tamanu oil and hyaluronic acid. Together, these ingredients give the serum a broader focus on hydration, skin conditioning and the appearance of firmness. It's an interesting formulation that combines newer skincare trends with more established moisturising and nourishing ingredients.
PROYA Advanced Firming Special Care Single Use Essence*
Water/Aqua/Eau, Methyl Gluceth-20, Butylene Glycol, Betaine, Dimethicone, 1,2-Hexanediol, Glycerin, Hydroxyacetophenone, Pentylene Glycol, Hydroxyethyl Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer, Ectoin, Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Maltodextrin, Allantoin, Panthenol, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cyclohexapeptide-90, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Extract, Tetrapeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-1, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Cynanchum Atratum Extract, Althaea Rosea Flower Extract, Ficus Carica (Fig) Fruit Extract, Superoxide Dismutase, Centella Asiatica Extract, Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, Biosaccharide Gum-1, Saccharide Isomerate, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Carbomer, Glucose, Arginine, Lecithin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Phytate, Sodium Lactate, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Polysorbate 20, Sorbitan Trioleate, Disodium EDTA, Caprylyl Glycol
Single-use skincare products are still relatively new to many Western beauty markets, but they're already quite common in China. This essence comes in individual sterile packaging, making it a practical option when travelling or when you want a pre-measured portion of product without carrying a full-size bottle.
The formula is enriched with Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), an antioxidant enzyme that helps protect against oxidative stress by neutralising superoxide radicals. It also contains ficin, a proteolytic enzyme derived from fig tree latex (the milky sap of the plant), which offers gentle exfoliating properties by helping break down proteins on the skin's surface.
Of course, PROYA hasn't left out the cyclic peptide technology and other peptides that are characteristic of this line. However, I find the combination of SOD and ectoin particularly interesting for an anti-ageing formula. While SOD provides antioxidant support, ectoin helps protect cells from environmental stress and supports skin hydration. Together, they complement the peptide-based approach, making this more than just another single-use essence.

This is a two-step sheet mask designed to combine intensive hydration with peptide-based anti-ageing care. The first step is a nourishing cream that contains Cyclopeptide-161 and a blend of peptides, including Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Hexapeptide-9 and Acetyl Tetrapeptide-9. Its formula also features jojoba oil, cupuaçu butter, panthenol, squalane and beta-glucan, creating a rich, emollient base that helps soften the skin, reduce moisture loss and support the skin barrier.
The second step is the mask itself, which focuses more on hydration and soothing care. Glycerin, butylene glycol, trehalose, erythritol and sodium hyaluronate help attract and retain moisture, while panthenol, allantoin and beta-glucan provide additional skin-conditioning benefits. It also contains adenosine, an ingredient commonly used in anti-wrinkle formulations, and Tetrapeptide-1 to complement the peptide-focused approach of the first step.
Together, the two steps offer a combination of nourishing lipids, humectants and peptides, making this an interesting treatment for skin that needs a boost of hydration alongside firming and anti-ageing care.
PROYA Original Repair Essence*
Water/Aqua/Eau, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Pentylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Methyl Gluceth-20, Lactobacillus/Soybean Ferment Extract, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, Sesamum Indicum (Sesame) Seed Oil, Cetyl Ethylhexanoate, Sodium Polyacrylate, Ophiopogon Japonicus Root Extract, Allantoin, Ribose, Dipalmitoyl Hydroxyproline, Methylsilanol Hydroxyproline Aspartate, Collagen, Andrographis Paniculata Extract, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Ceramide EOP, Ceramide NP, Polygonum Bistorta Root Extract, Hexapeptide-9, Whey Protein, Beta-Glucan, Lactobacillus Ferment, Lactose, Lactic Acid, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil, Xanthan Gum, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate, Sucrose Laurate, Maltodextrin, Triethyl Citrate, Disodium EDTA, Polyglyceryl-6 Behenate, Sucrose Dilaurate, Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium Levulinate, Behenic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearates, Cholesterol, Fragrance/Parfum, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Sucrose Polylaurate, Hexylene Glycol, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate, Silica
This dual-phase micro-emulsion combines a lightweight, fluid texture with a formula designed to support skin resilience and address visible signs of ageing. Its main focus is recombinant type XVII collagen, a particularly interesting ingredient in PROYA's skin-repair portfolio. Type XVII collagen is a structural protein found in the skin's basement membrane, where it plays an important role in maintaining the connection between the epidermis and dermis. Its presence in this formula reflects PROYA's interest in extracellular matrix-related skincare technologies and supporting the skin's structural integrity.
The formula also features Ceramide AC60 and the proprietary ProECM Complex, which PROYA positions as key components of its approach to improving skin firmness and elasticity. Ceramides help replenish the skin's protective lipid barrier, supporting moisture retention and skin comfort, while ProECM Complex is designed to target the extracellular matrix and the visible changes associated with ageing.
What makes this essence interesting is its combination of two complementary approaches: supporting the skin barrier and targeting the appearance of reduced firmness and elasticity. Rather than focusing solely on hydration, PROYA brings together barrier-supporting ingredients and its collagen-related technology to create a more comprehensive skin-conditioning formula.
PROYA Original Repair Relieving Emulsion*
Water/Aqua/Eau, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Butylene Glycol, Pentaerythrityl Tetraethylhexanoate, Dimethicone, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate Citrate, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, 1,2-Hexanediol, Hydroxyacetophenone, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Cetearyl Glucoside, Tromethamine, Glyceryl Glucoside, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Oil, Stearyl Glycyrrhetinate, Collagen, Oldenlandia Diffusa Extract, Ophiopogon Japonicus Root Extract, Acetyl Dipeptide-1 Cetyl Ester, Beta-Glucan, Ceramide NP, Ceramide EOP, Carbomer, Disodium EDTA, Dipropylene Glycol, Maltodextrin, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate, Triethyl Citrate, Polyglyceryl-6 Behenate, Sodium Levulinate, Behenic Acid, Citric Acid, Glyceryl Stearates, Cholesterol, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate
This creamy emulsion is formulated with recombinant type XVII collagen, an ingredient PROYA uses in its skin-repair-focused formulations. The formula is designed to provide hydration, help soothe visible redness and support compromised skin. One of its key features is ODP Repair Technology, which uses a micronized emulsion system to create a breathable protective layer on the skin. This helps reduce moisture loss while maintaining skin comfort.
The formula also contains a neuropeptide and Ceramide AC60, which complement the collagen technology by supporting the skin barrier. Together, these ingredients make this emulsion an interesting option for skin that needs extra care, particularly when the barrier is weakened and the skin is more prone to dryness, redness and discomfort.
PROYA Med Double Usage Lotion Mist*
Water/Aqua/Eau, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Pentylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Isononyl Isononanoate, Niacinamide, Sorbeth-30 Tetraoleate, Diphenylsiloxy Phenyl Trimethicone, Hydroxyacetophenone, Panthenol, Squalane, Sorbitan Sesquiisostearate, Acrylates/Beheneth-25 Methacrylate Copolymer, Arginine, Sorbitan Sesquioleate, Collagen, Gentiana Scabra Root Extract, Ceramide EOP, Ceramide NP, Sodium DNA, Hydrolyzed DNA, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Fruit Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Eucommia Ulmoides Bark Extract, Artemisia Capillaris Extract, Phellodendron Amurense Bark Extract, Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Extract, Dipotassium Glycyrrhizate, Adenosine, Allantoin, Ammonium Polyacryloyldimethyl Taurate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Polyglyceryl-10 Stearate, 1,2-Hexanediol, Triethyl Citrate, Polyglyceryl-6 Behenate, Dextrin, Behenic Acid, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cholesterol, Silica, Glyceryl Stearates, Sodium Levulinate, Potassium Sorbate, Citric Acid, Maltodextrin, Sodium Cetearyl Sulfate
This versatile lotion mist combines the convenience of a facial spray with the skin-conditioning benefits of a lightweight emulsion. Its formula is based on Dual PDRN, combining salmon-derived PDRN with plant-derived PDRN, and also features recombinant type XVII collagen, a technology associated with PROYA's Original Repair line. The formula is designed to support skin repair and resilience while providing hydration and helping maintain a healthy skin barrier.
There is more to this mist than its PDRN complex, though. Ceramide EOP, Ceramide NP and cholesterol help replenish the skin's protective lipid barrier, while niacinamide supports barrier function and helps improve overall skin condition. Glycerin, butylene glycol and panthenol provide hydration, and squalane and sunflower seed oil help soften the skin and reduce moisture loss. The addition of allantoin, dipotassium glycyrrhizate and several botanical extracts further complements its soothing, skin-conditioning approach.
As part of PROYA MED, this product is particularly interesting for sensitive or barrier-compromised skin. Despite its mist format, the presence of emollients, ceramides and other barrier-supporting ingredients makes it more than a simple hydrating spray. It's a convenient way to refresh the skin while adding a layer of moisture and nourishment throughout the day.
PROYA Med Light Moisturizing Single Use Essence*

This lightweight essence is designed for skin experiencing dryness, flaking and redness, particularly after sun exposure or contact with harsh environmental stressors. It combines Dual PDRN, featuring both salmon-derived and plant-derived PDRN, with collagen and PROYA's Ceramide AC60 technology. The formula is intended to support skin resilience, improve hydration and help restore a weakened skin barrier.
Its soothing approach goes beyond PDRN. The formula contains panthenol, ectoin, centella asiatica, beta-glucan and dipotassium glycyrrhizate, a combination of ingredients known for their moisturising, soothing and skin-conditioning properties. Ectoin is particularly interesting here, as it helps protect skin cells against environmental stress while supporting hydration. Meanwhile, ceramides and cholesterol help replenish the skin's protective lipid layer, reducing moisture loss and improving skin comfort.
The single-use packaging makes this essence particularly convenient when travelling or when the skin needs an additional layer of hydration and soothing care. Rather than focusing on traditional anti-ageing benefits, PROYA MED takes a more recovery-oriented approach, combining barrier-supporting ingredients with its PDRN technology to help skin cope with dryness, irritation and environmental stress.

Proya Double Effect Whitening Brightening Essence*
Concentrated Essence: Dipropylene Glycol, Hexyldecanol, Glycerin, Water/Aqua, Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, Bisabolol, Tocopheryl Glucoside, Tocopheryl Acetate, Astaxanthin. Revitalizing Essence: Water/Aqua, Glycerin, Methyl Gluceth-20, Butylene Glycol, Niacinamide, PEG-75, Glyceryl Glucoside, 1,2-Hexanediol, Tranexamic Acid, Hydroxyacetophenone, Arginine, Carbomer, PPG-13-Decyltetradeceth-24, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract, Panthenol, Decarboxy Carnosine HCl, Ergothioneine, Naringin, Dipeptide-4, Ethylbisiminomethylguaiacol Manganese Chloride, Bacillus Ferment, Salvia Miltiorrhiza Leaf Extract, Thiotaurine, Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Diglucosyl Gallic Acid, Sodium Hyaluronate, Acetyl Glucosamine, Hydroxyethylpiperazine Ethane Sulfonic Acid, Allantoin, Hydroxypropyl Cyclodextrin, Tocopherol, Dipropylene Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Propanediol, Caprylyl Glycol, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Sucrose Laurate, Sodium Dilauramidoglutamide Lysine, Sucrose Dilaurate, Sucrose Polylaurate, Fragrance/Parfum
This is the essence I purchased myself, and it's one of the more interesting brightening formulations in PROYA's portfolio. The product features a dual-formula system, combining a concentrated antioxidant essence with a water-based revitalising essence. It reminds me a little of Laneige Radian-C Double Active Brightening Essence, which also combines two separate formulations in one product.
The concentrated phase focuses on antioxidant protection, featuring astaxanthin, bisabolol and two forms of vitamin E(tocopheryl glucoside and tocopheryl acetate). The revitalising phase takes a more comprehensive approach to uneven skin tone, combining several brightening ingredients, including niacinamide, tranexamic acid, naringin, diglucosyl gallic acid and acetyl glucosamine. The formula also contains Dipeptide-4 and Decarboxy Carnosine HCl, which are particularly interesting in the context of PROYA's research into antioxidant defence and anti-glycation mechanisms.
According to the brand, this formula is the result of 16 years of dedicated research, focusing on two key targets: Nrf2 and GLO-1. Nrf2 is a transcription factor involved in regulating cellular antioxidant defence, while GLO-1 (glyoxalase 1) is an enzyme involved in detoxifyingreactive carbonyl compounds, including methylglyoxal, which can contribute to the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). By targeting these pathways, PROYA aims to address oxidative stress and glycation-related changes associated with skin ageing.
What makes this essence particularly interesting is that it goes beyond the usual niacinamide-based brightening approach. It combines ingredients targeting uneven pigmentation with antioxidants and compounds selected to support the skin's defence mechanisms. It's a more complex approach to brightening that also considers some of the biochemical processes involved in skin ageing.
PROYA Double Effect Brightening Intensive Single Use Essence*
Powder: Nag, 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Mannitol, Erythritol, Trehalose, Ergothioneine, Disodium EDTA, Water, Dipropylene Glycol, 2,3-Butanediol, Glycerol, Cyklokapron, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Pentylene Glycol, Hydroxyacetophenone, PEG/PPG-14/7 Dimethyl Ether, Polydimethylsiloxane, Citrus Reticulata Fruit Extract, Panthenol, VP/Hexadecene Copolymer, Arginine, Nicotinamide, Albizia Julibrissin Bark Extract, Centella Asiatica Extract, Lavandula Angustifolia Flower Extract, L Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Gold, Astaxanthin, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Glutathione, Decarboxy Carnosine Hcl, Carnosine, Arginine/Lysine Polypeptide, Dipeptide-4, Arctium Lappa Seed Extract, Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Biosaccharide Gum-1, Mannitol, Sodium Benzoate, Asiatic Acid, Tremella Fuciformis Sporocarp Extract, Tocopherols, Propanediol, PPG-13-Decyltetradeceth-24, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Coptis Japonica Root Extract, Raphanus Sativus Sprout Extract, Cyclodextrin, Ammonium Acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP Copolymer, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Chloride, Sodium Phytate, Maltodextrin, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glucose, Hexylene Glycol, Sodium Pyrosulfite, Sorbitol, Parfum, Caprylyl Glycol, Xanthan Gum, Carbomer
This is an intensive brightening treatment designed for dull skin, combining a powder phase with a liquid essence that you mix immediately before the first use. This format helps keep the powder-based ingredients separate until application. It reminds me of Primera's powder-to-serum concept, where the two phases are activated by mixing them together.
The formula features a particularly interesting combination of 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid, Ergothioneine and Decarboxy Carnosine HCl. 3-O-Ethyl Ascorbic Acid is a stable vitamin C derivative that helps improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and provides antioxidant benefits. Ergothioneine is another powerful antioxidant, while Decarboxy Carnosine HCl is associated with research into protecting against glycation-related damage. The formula also contains several additional antioxidant and brightening ingredients, including L-Ascorbic Acid, Ascorbyl Glucoside, glutathione, carnosine, astaxanthin and niacinamide.
PROYA describes this formula as using dual advanced delivery technology, combining vitamin C, gold and glutathione. Another interesting aspect is its focus on carnosine and Decarboxy Carnosine HCl. According to the brand, the product was inspired by Nobel Prize-winning research into supramolecular delivery technology involving carnosine-related compounds. This is an intriguing direction, particularly given the growing interest in antioxidant protection and anti-glycation strategies in skincare.
Rather than relying on a single brightening active, this essence brings together several antioxidant ingredients that target different aspects of skin dullness and uneven tone. It's an ambitious formulation that combines vitamin C derivatives with antioxidant and anti-glycation ingredients in a freshly activated, single-use format.
Which other C-beauty skincare brands are worth checking?
Although many C-beauty brands aren't widely available internationally yet, there are plenty worth exploring beyond PROYA. If you're planning a trip to China or have the opportunity to shop through Chinese retailers, here are some brands to add to your list.
- Chando (自然堂) – A high-tech skincare brand that combines nature-inspired ingredients with scientific research. Chando is particularly well known for its sheet masks, making it a good starting point if you're interested in exploring Chinese mask innovations.
- Fan Beauty Diary (美黎汎) – Founded by Chinese actress Fan Bingbing, this brand is particularly associated with sheet masks. Fan Bingbing is well known for her skincare routine and has spoken about her frequent use of sheet masks, so it's perhaps no surprise that masks became a key part of her beauty brand.
- Herborist (佰草集) – I remember when Herborist products were available at Sephora in Europe around 2008. The brand draws inspiration from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and combines traditional botanical ingredients with modern skincare research, making it an interesting example of how Chinese beauty heritage continues to influence contemporary formulations.
- KANS (韩束) – This is a brand I frequently come across on Chinese social media. It focuses heavily on anti-ageing skincare and has gained visibility through its active presence in China's beauty market. If you're interested in how Chinese brands approach modern anti-ageing formulations, KANS is worth exploring.
- Comfy (可复美) – A skincare brand focused on sensitive skin and skin that needs additional care, including after aesthetic procedures. Its positioning makes it particularly interesting if you're looking for products designed around skin barrier support and soothing care.
- Pechoin (百雀羚) – Founded in 1931, Pechoin is one of China's established skincare brands. It combines traditional Chinese botanical ingredients and TCM-inspired concepts with modern skincare development. Its distinctive packaging and heritage-inspired aesthetic also make its products appealing as gifts.
- Simply This (诗肤理) – Founded in 2019, Simply This draws inspiration from the Daliang Mountains in Sichuan, a region known for its rich natural landscapes and biodiversity. The brand's nature-inspired aesthetic and emphasis on sustainability make it worth a closer look, especially if you're interested in C-beauty brands with a strong connection to their place of origin.
- Winona (薇诺娜) – A skincare brand particularly associated with sensitive-skin care and dermatological research. Its formulations feature botanical ingredients and are designed to help address the needs of sensitive, easily irritated skin. Winona is a good brand to explore if you're interested in the intersection of dermatology-inspired skincare and Chinese botanical ingredients.
PROYA is an exciting C-beauty brand combining ingredient research, proprietary technologies and modern skincare formulations. From recombinant collagen and peptides to PDRN and advanced brightening complexes, its portfolio offers plenty to explore beyond familiar K-beauty names. While its scientific claims deserve a critical look, PROYA is definitely a brand to keep on your radar as Chinese beauty continues to expand internationally.
