Centella is also known as Tiger Grass, but what do tigers have to do with this herb? The story goes much deeper than a simple nickname, as it is rooted in Korean myths, folklore, and history. For centuries, tigers have symbolized courage, strength, and protection against evil spirits. According to legend, injured tigers would roll in patches of Centella Asiatica to soothe their wounds and help their skin recover, which eventually gave the plant its famous nickname.

Historically, the Korean Peninsula was home to the Siberian tiger, and the animal became deeply embedded in Korean identity. During Japanese colonial rule, the colonial government launched the Harmful Animal Eradication Project, which targeted tigers and leopards as threats to livestock, people, and development. The last known tiger in Korea was captured during this period. While Japanese authorities portrayed the Korean Peninsula as a rabbit, Korean historian Ch'oe Namsŏn famously described it as a tiger - a symbol of resilience and strength that also appears in Korea's creation mythology.

Although wild tigers disappeared from the peninsula, they remain one of Korea's most recognizable cultural symbols. Meet the brand: Centellian24 

Centellian24 is a Korean skincare brand launched in 2015 by Dongkook Pharmaceutical. The brand name is inspired by Centella Asiatica, also known as tiger grass. It is a derma-cosmetic brand built around TECA technology, with Centella Asiatica as its key ingredient.

According to the legend cited by Centellian24 on its website, tigers were believed to heal their wounds by rubbing against Centella plants, which inspired the nickname “tiger grass.” The Centella Asiatica used by Centellian24 undergoes an extensive process - from harvesting wild Centella to extracting only 2% of active components from 100 kg of plant material, followed by a 7-step extraction process.

Centellian24 has its own R&D (Research & Development) department, allowing the brand to develop its formulas in-house, from the initial concept to the final product. The brand sources Centella leaves from Madagascar for its formulations.

Madeca Cream is the flagship cream of Centellian24. Dongkook Pharmaceutical, Centellian24's parent company, launched Madecassol around 1970–1978, depending on the source. CICA vs TECA - what’s the difference?

Both CICA and TECA are terms related to Centella Asiatica, a powerful plant widely used in cosmetics.

CICA is simply a shorthand for Centella Asiatica, a herb rich in triterpene saponins - bioactive compounds that have made this plant one of the most popular skincare ingredients.

TECA stands for Titrated Extract of Centella Asiatica. It is a purified extract containing the most valuable bioactive compounds found in Centella, including asiaticoside, asiatic acid, madecassoside, and madecassic acid. Depending on the category, they may help improve wrinkles, brighten the skin, protect against UV rays, relieve acne symptoms, support atopic skin, improve the appearance of stretch marks, or help relieve the symptoms of hair loss. The first version of the cult-favorite Madeca Cream was released in 2015. It contained 49% Centella Asiatica Leaf Water instead of distilled water. Centellian24 used Centella Asiatica grown in pristine environments, while Dongkook Pharmaceutical carefully selected its raw materials to provide the highest-quality ingredients. The brand also developed its own TECA (Titrated Extract of Centella Asiatica) golden ratio: 4:3:3.

The cream was recommended for improving skin hydration, density, and texture, while also helping to reduce the appearance of melasma, pigmentation, and dead skin cells. It was designed to soothe skin damaged by UV exposure and improve the appearance of deep wrinkles.

Centellian24 continued to use Centella Asiatica Water instead of purified water. The brand included 1% TECA, and the product was still promoted as a functional cosmetic for skin brightening and wrinkle improvement. This version of the cream focused strongly on hydration while also providing lifting benefits.

I found information that the formula contained the Aqua 3 Core Complex, which combines Centella Asiatica Leaf Extract, Pentavitin, and Hyaluronic Acid. As with previous versions, Centellian24 also incorporated patented ingredients into the formula.

Besides TECA, some of the key ingredients in this formula were water-soluble collagen, hyaluronic acid, elastin, Ceramide NP, and phospholipids, known together as the 5-Core Tension Complex (50,000 ppm). The formula had a strong focus on supporting the skin barrier.

It contained 450,000 ppm of Centella Asiatica Extract, 1,000 ppm of Centella Asiatica Oil, and 50 ppm of Centella Asiatica Protein™. The formula was also clinically proven to increase the expression of the HAS3 enzyme, which plays an important role in hyaluronic acid synthesis.

The new formula was more minimalist compared with previous versions. It had a lighter, more everyday cream texture rather than a rich, thick formula, while still maintaining its focus on skin barrier support and anti-aging benefits.

The main difference in the sixth season was the introduction of an advanced encapsulated TECA formula. The use of TECA fermentation technology (TECA encapsulation) was designed to improve TECA absorption by reducing its particle size. According to the brand, the encapsulated TECA reaches 1/4,000 of the size of a pore and 1/3 of the space between micro-keratin structures (50 nanometers).

Previously, Centellian24 did not use fermented TECA technology in its formulas. The new formula introduced Lactobacillus/Centella Asiatica Extract Ferment Filtrate, which undergoes a 365-day fermentation process.

Another new ingredient was Ascorbyl Asiatate, also known as Vitamadeca™, a patented brightening ingredient developed to support skin radiance.

This is the current season of Centellian24 Madeca Cream. It is positioned as an anti-aging solution suitable for both daughters in their 20s-30s and mothers in their 40s-60s. I’m not going to lie — both my mom and I have used this cream. This is considered the most advanced formula released by Centellian24 so far. It is a similar concept to products like AHC eye creams or IOPE retinol, which are often marketed across generations.

TECA remains the main focus of the formula, but this time the brand highlights that 2% of TECA is extracted from 100 kg of Centella Asiatica, using a 7-step extraction process. According to Centellian24, this results in a TECA concentration that is three times higher than before. The actual amount of TECA added to this product is 11,900 ppm.

The biggest difference in the current version is the addition of retinol, which was not present in the previous season. Another notable ingredient is Sodium DNA, also known as PDRN, which has become a highly popular ingredient in skincare. The selection of antioxidants in this formula is also particularly interesting.

This is the original Season 7 product, but Centellian24 has also released additional versions of Madeca Cream that are worth exploring.

My personal take on this product is that it’s a good cream, but it feels too heavy for oily and combination skin, especially during spring and summer. Thankfully, Centellian24 offers a lighter alternative for these skin types - Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse Zero, which I mention below.

Unfortunately, it is not the best choice for sensitive skin due to the presence of fragrance ingredients. My skin reacts with mild redness to this cream, likely because of the fragrance components, but I cannot deny that it provides excellent hydration and has noticeable anti-aging benefits.

What makes this formula different is the use of Target-TECA™. According to the brand, it is absorbed faster than standard TECA. In total, the formula contains 18 different ingredients derived from Centella Asiatica. It also includes retinol, collagen, and hyaluronic acid, creating a rich, nourishing formula.

This version focuses more specifically on targeting wrinkles around the neck, mouth area, nasolabial folds, forehead, and eye area. It is promoted as providing a 2.6x improved anti-aging effect and a 4.9x improved lifting effect. Compared with traditional Madeca Cream formulas, this version places a stronger emphasis on skin longevity.

It is not surprising that this product is also promoted as helping protect against photoaging and heat-induced aging, as these topics have become increasingly popular in Korean skincare over the past few years.

I have noticed that some websites refer to this version as Season 8.

This is a lighter version of the Time Reverse Cream. I often see it recommended for sensitive skin, but in my opinion, it is actually a version that may be more suitable for acne-prone skin. I don’t think that Centellian24 creams are the best choice for truly sensitive skin because of the presence of fragrance ingredients.

The main difference compared with the Time Reverse version is that Time Reverse Zero uses Blue Active-TECA™.

The brand also highlights another carefully selected ratio: 3:1:1 of Ceramides, Phytosterols, and Stearic Acid.

I have used this version myself, and it is definitely lighter than Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse. It feels more suitable for oily and combination skin types, especially those dealing with acne concerns. However, the formula may still be irritating for oily or combination skin that is also sensitive, as it contains several fragrance ingredients. In my case, it caused some mild redness.

Still, if Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse feels too heavy for your skin, Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse Zero is a lighter alternative worth considering.

I’m honestly sad that we don’t have the Centellian24 Madeca Cream Power Boosting Formula AD version available in stores or that this version is so rare, because it seems like a really nice alternative. If you struggle with blemishes, pigmentation, or simply want to add more antioxidants to your routine, you might really enjoy this version.

The main ingredients in this formula are collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid, but the most important feature is Crystal-TECA™. In this technology, TECA is encapsulated in crystal liposomes to support better absorption.

And what about antioxidants? Don’t worry - Centellian24 Madeca Cream Power Boosting Formula AD contains Vitamin C, Glutathione, and Astaxanthin, an ingredient that I personally love seeing in skincare products. From what I understand, Centellian24 introduced Alkan LV2, a completely new technology within the Madeca Cream line, in this formula. Centellian24 Madeca Cream Hydra Calming is the version I’m currently using because it’s summer and my skin needs more hydration. It’s a lightweight formula with cooling properties. It is based on Hydra-TECA™ moisture capsules, which, according to the brand, respond automatically to skin temperatures above 32°C. I can’t personally verify this technology, but the cream does feel lighter - even more lightweight than Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse Zero.

It still contains some fragrance ingredients, and unfortunately, they do make my skin slightly red, so I wish the amount of fragrance components was reduced. I don’t have an issue with Menthol since it is the ingredient responsible for the cooling sensation, but Citral is something I would prefer to see minimized.

The cream absorbs very quickly. I think this version is a great choice for most skin types during summer, but sensitive skin may react to the fragrance ingredients.

It's another anti-aging cream from Centellian24, but this one is designed to focus more on lifting properties. It is promoted with Moving-TECA™ technology, which is based on encapsulating TECA with hyaluronic acid to support deeper and faster absorption. However, this is not the only technology used in this formula. The key ingredients included in this solution are Asiaticoside, Madecassic Acid, Asiatic Acid, Water, Butylene Glycol, 1,2-Hexanediol, C12-13 Pareth-9, Sodium Hyaluronate, Glycerin, Ethoxydiglycol, Octyldodecanol, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Glycolipids, Glycine, Glutamic Acid, and Arginine.

Other technologies used by Centellian24 in this version include Collagen-TECA (focused on improving elasticity), Vita-TECA (focused on skin brightening), and Sera-TECA (focused on supporting the skin barrier and hydration). I couldn’t find any officially translated materials, so I hope I haven’t misunderstood anything while translating the brand’s promotional information for this cream.

Centellian24 Expert Madeca Cream Active Renew PDRN is one of the versions I’m currently using, and I feel like it might be my favourite one. It contains TECA-PDRN™, a blend of 5D-PDRN, rose water, and TECA, designed to support skin elasticity. The 5D-PDRN is a combination of Salmon PDRN, Marine PDRN, Rose PDRN, Heartleaf PDRN, and Centella Asiatica PDRN.

This cream is designed for skin concerns such as overheated skin, puffiness, dryness, blemishes, and a damaged skin barrier.

It doesn’t feel as heavy as the traditional Madeca Cream, but Centellian24 Expert Madeca Cream Active Renew PDRN has a smoother and slightly oilier texture - in a positive way. It doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy. Instead, it gives a more natural, healthy-looking glow. I would say go for this version if you want the strongest anti-aging care.

I wasn’t sure whether to mention Centellian24 Sun Madeca Cream SPF35 PA++ in this post, but the packaging aesthetic clearly shows that it belongs to the Madeca Cream series. This is a sunscreen, and if you prefer high sun protection like I do, SPF35 and PA++ might sound a little disappointing.

This cream follows the cooling skincare trend. As I mentioned before, heat-induced aging has become a major topic in skincare recently, and many brands have started introducing products with cooling properties. Last year, I reviewed Beplain and Laneige sunscreens with cooling effects, so I’m not surprised that Sun Madeca Cream claims to lower skin temperature by around -4°C.

The technology used in this sunscreen is called Ice-TECA™, and it is responsible for the cooling effect. It combines TECA, glacier water, and Limonia Acidissima Extract. According to the brand, this complex helps protect against collagen degradation and cellular stress caused by infrared radiation and heat.

Which Centellian24 Madeca Cream version is right for you?

Centellian24 Madeca Cream is no longer just one product — the brand has created multiple versions targeting different skin concerns. Here’s a quick guide to help you choose:

• Dry skin / intensive anti-aging → Centellian24 Madeca Cream Time Reverse
  A rich, nourishing formula with TECA, retinol, PDRN (Sodium DNA), and antioxidants. A good option for dry skin, mature skin, or anyone looking for stronger anti-aging care.

Remember that the “best” version depends on your skin’s current needs. Also, many Centellian24 formulas contain fragrance ingredients, so even though Centella is known as a soothing ingredient, very reactive skin may still need to be careful.

Centellian24 alternatives for sensitive skin

Personally, I wish Centellian24 would release a fragrance-free version specifically for very sensitive skin. Hopefully, we'll see one in the future, but until then, here are a few alternatives I think are worth considering. Some are already personal favourites, while others are still on my wishlist.

ARZTIN Regenerative Schild Cream

This is probably the closest alternative to Madeca Cream Time Reverse. Like Madeca Cream, it focuses on skin elasticity and barrier repair while featuring peptides and several patented technologies. The formula is also much more sensitive skin-friendly. I reviewed it a few years ago, but I definitely plan to update that review. You can read it here. It costs around $30 at Olive Young Global*.

Aestura Regederm 365 Intensive Lifting Capsule Cream

This cream was recommended to me by Yuhee from OneEyeBeauty. Aestura is well known for creating products for sensitive skin, and although I've only tried a few samples from the brand, this cream is high on my wishlist. It's definitely on the expensive side, but a formula combining Vitamin C, PDRN, and skin barrier-supporting ingredients sounds very promising. You can find it at Olive Young Global* and Amore Mall Global.

easydew EGFx Downtime Cream

If you're looking for a more advanced anti-aging formula, this is a great option. Similar to ARZTIN, it focuses on growth factors while also combining PDRN and panthenol. It seems particularly well suited to mature skin. It costs around $27 at Olive Young Global*.

S.NATURE Aqua Squalane Moisturizing Cream

This is one of my all-time favourite moisturizers. I'm already on my fourth tube, and I usually buy the twin packs because they're better value. It's much lighter than Madeca Cream, with a formula that focuses mainly on hydration while also including peptides for wrinkle care. It works especially well for combination and oily skin. You can find it at Olive Young Global* and YesStyle*.

ongredients Skin Barrier Calming Lotion EX

I haven't tried the EX version yet, but I really enjoyed the original Skin Barrier Calming Lotion. It never caused any redness, although it was rich enough that I preferred using it only in my evening routine. The EX version focuses on intense hydration and contains 12 peptides while combining CICA and TECA, much like Centellian24 Madeca Cream. It's available at Olive Young Global* and YesStyle*.

Overall, it's easy to understand why Centellian24 Madeca Cream has become such a bestseller. The range offers a formula for almost every skin concern, from hydration and barrier repair to anti-aging and lifting. Just remember that many versions contain fragrance ingredients, so if your skin is particularly sensitive, it's always worth patch testing first - or choosing a fragrance-free alternative instead.
